I will be spending a few weeks in europe next summer. Anybody recommend places to stay in amsterdam and berlin? There will be 4 of us were open to stay in hotels, hostels, or B&B's.

We stayed at the Movenpick Berlin a couple of years ago. It is a contemporary hotel that was a wherehouse at one time. The location was very good. Not far from Potdamerplatz and transportation. We paid about $100 USD with bkfast. about 2 yrs. ago. It is a great value. Check out Movenpick on line, that's what we did and got the rate from them.

Use priceline for both cities. I can't imagine you will get a better deal in either place.

In Amsterdam, we liked the Hotel Residence le Coin, for our family of four. It's very well-located, charming, clean, and moderately priced. The rooms are large, new bathrooms, with in-floor heating. And they have kitchenettes.

We had a twin room, which connected to our double room. They have lots of configurations, and are very helpful. If you are students, you might ask for a discount. We got one because my husband was in town for a conference at the university.

For Berlin, I would also recommend www.hrs.com, which is the biggest consolidator for hotel rooms in Germany. You usually get more hotels than via Priceline - for a dummy reservation for some day next January, Priceline found some 100 hotels while HRS found almost 300 hotels with vacancies.
And always check the location of the hotel on the map with Priceline, since they have a rather general attitude towards what is "in Berlin", and label neighboring cities like Potsdam as "Berlin-Potsdam" while in fact the centers of both cities are 20mls apart.

Hotel-Apartments with kitchenettes have become somewhat popular in Berlin (more or less like an extended stay motel in the US) - but you can often rent them also for just 1 or 2 nights. If you need a room for a week or longer, these places (usually) are always cheaper than the cheapest hotel/B&B.

When you check prices at hrs.com (you can switch the whole site to English, btw) I would also suggest to look at the very inexpensive offers (less than €50 for a double room), because you often find special offers by new hotels.

I just found one of these new places for my trip to Berlin in January. The hotel is called Metropolitan Hansa, they are in a good location, and charge € 39 per night for a double room (not per person) which should be around $55 these days.
