I want to go from Prague to Vienna to Salzburg to Innsbruck to Venice by train. Is this an insane thing to do? I know there is a train to Venice from Vienna but I can't tell if I can add these other areas without totally going out of the way. If so, does anyone know how many hours it would take from Vienna? I've never used the trains so would it be too confusing for me to try and do it? Thanks!

I'll be doing the Salzburg-Vienna-Prague (with Budapest) by train. That's not
out-of-the way. There's a direct train from Innsbruck to Venice in the afternoon which takes about 5 hours. How long is this trip? If you have 3 weeks, sure. One week...way too much! And have fun!! Venice is on my list for my next trip!

I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you want to take the train from Vienna to Venice via Salzburg and Innsbruck without stopping in either Salzburg or Innsbruck? What would be the point?

From Vienna to Venice is either 11 hours, changing trains twice, once in Innsbruck and once in Verona, or 7 hours with a direct train that does not go through Salzburg or Innsbruck.

Prague - Vienna: Direct ~4:30
Vienna - Salzburg: Direct ~3:00, very frequent
Salzburg - Innsbruck: Direct ~1:50, very frequent
Innsbruck - Venice: One direct overnight, one direct daytime; more itinerary involving one change. ~5:30

If you're going straight from Vienna to Venice, there's a daily direct that takes only 7:00. Plus a night train that takes ~12:00.

I don't see why this can't be done.

I always assume (and obviously sometimes incorrectly) that people who are traveling from one city to another in Europe have LOOKED at a map to see where these places lie in relation to one another.

Yes, this itinerary can be done by train, and quite easily. Some people here think you are "insane" if you even CONSIDER going anywhere by rail.

I susggest you consult the various on-line timetables such as www,bahn.de to give you a better, and first-hand idea of the timings and connections involved.

Thanks for all the replies. This is the situation. I will be flying into Prague and out of Venice. I was originally going to take a train to Vienna and then on to Venice. Once I thought about how close I was to the Swarovski factory in Wattens I was hoping to be able to go there for a tour. When I was talking to a friend she told me not to miss Salzburg. So now I have a dilema. I only have 11 days to make this all work. I would consider giving up Vienna entirely if that would make more sense. Any thoughts? Thanks!
