Venice to Innsbruck or Salzburg
My granddaughter will be working in Venice for a year. I am thinking of visiting her, and would love to take an overnight side trip to either Innsbruck or Salzburg...via train or perhaps a nice bus. Can anyone help me with information or websites that could help with this planning?

Fabulous! Innsbruck is wonderful and Salzburg is a nice day trip from there.
I took the train from Venice to Vienna and I am pretty sure it stopped in Innsbruck and Salzburg or you could find trains that would.
Do a search here of European train schedules and you will find all the links you need to plan your trip.

Hi B,
In addition, the 22:52 from Venezia San Lucia arrives Munich at 06:31 (no changes).
There are trains at 06:40, 07:26 and 07:42 to Salzburg.
Trains leave for Innsbruck at 06:40, 07:30 and 07:42
See www.bahn.de fro trains from Munich.

I wish someone would explain to me what it is about Innsbruck that makes it appealing. I must have missed something in my last 2 visits that would have been of more interest than what I saw.
If you want to go to Salzburg, the most direct route is via Villach. Unfortunately the only day time train that makes this trip leaves at 6:44 and takes a little over 6 hours.
Vienna is about a 7 hour trip.
There is a night train to Salzburg that arrives about 4:10 in the morning.
What you would do until the attractions open is something I don't know.
If you planned to stay overnight, your hotel room would not be ready for probably 8 hours, and nothing much is open until after 8 am.
There is only one direct connection to Innsbruck from Venice, and it departs in the early afternoon. Most of the connections require a change in Vernona.
Between 5 and 6 hours travel time is about the best you can do by train.

PS. I use the Austrian website for most of the train schedules involving Austrian cities. www.oebb.at
It has English captions. Look in the a little to the right of the top middle of the screen. There is a dropdown box that says Sprache/Language.
Your choices are German and English. The German version is more complete, but the English version will enable you to obtain all the schedule information you need to plan various trips involving Austrian destinations.]
The Austrian scheduler is also very good for trains in Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romainia as well as Austria and Germany.
