alps in early May

I'm driving from Munich to Lake Como in early May, and will stop overnight about 1/2 way.

My question is this: I realize the weather is going to be shite (most hotels in the Engadine are closed) ... but is it going to be "winter" or "summer." In other words, if I do catch lucky break with the weather, does that mean there will be snow on the ground for skiiers, or grass for hikers/walkers (like me).

I'm so confused ...

Also ... any cheap hotel recommendations anywhere from Pfunds to St. Moritz?

danke!

Rob

I was there in June several years ago and we had rain/chilly weather. Some warm days but not hot.

Check out weather.com type in a city there and click averages. Will give you an idea anyway.

No more skiing but you'll see snow high up in the mountains, brown in the middle and green in the valleys and hills.

We just received a bit of snow last week but there's still not enough as compared to last year.

If the weather winds up being "typical," will it be possible to take walks in the mountains, or is it usually too wet?

"usually" it's very difficult to tell. You need to be flexible and prepared for anything. But it's not different from anywhere else in high mountain areas. Maybe or maybe not. Even in summer, the weather can change within minutes. You need to pay close attention to the local forecast and stay away from trouble .
