Alone in Rome for one day
I sent a message-question which has disappeared in cyberspace, so here it is again...
I'm arriving in Rome on a Saturday morning this September, and will be connecting with a tour group on Sunday morning. I don't know what to do with myself for a little under 24 hours! Should I check into an inexpensive hotel near the FCO airport, and is there anything of tourist interest in that area? Can I check my bags at the airport and travel into Rome for the day? Is there a way to return to the airport late Sturday night, and just hang-out until 7:30AM the next morning, when the rest of my group arrives in Rome?
I don't mind being alone, but I'd like to have some interesting and fun options for the day and evening.
Thanks so much to one and all who take the time to respond. Everyone was super helpful a year ago when I traveled from Milan to Lugano, Switzerland, and then on to Venice. Great trip!

Is Rome the first overnight stop for the group? If so, why not just have them arrange for you to check into the tour hotel a day early? That way you won't have the bother to move hotels - and can just enjoy the day in Rome to yourself.

Thanks for the hint from Budman on retrieving earlier responses to my inquiry!
To nytraveler, my group will not be staying in Rome, but traveling on, after we all gather, to Positano. For my circumstances it's better if I go with the group rather than travel to Positano alone and meet everyone there.
I appreciate the information!

I certainly wouldn't want to hang around the airport all night, don't think that's a good idea at all. Since you have to meet the tour group so early, maybe stay at an airport hotel and take the train into Rome for the day on Saturday.
