My fiance and I are thinking of adding one day in Rome at the tail end of our honeymoon before flying out of Naples. We will be in Positano, but have friends who will be in Rome that day.<BR><BR>Question: how early would we need to leave Positano to make it worth our while to do a day in Rome? If it's really almost 4 hours of travel, it might not work. Our flight leaves at 2 p.m. from Naples the following day. Are we being foolish, or can it be reasonably done?

Jennifer<BR><BR>Yes, it is about 4 hours. 1 - 1 1/2 to get to the Autostrade & then 3 hrs to Roma. I would take a pass on a day trip. Besides, you will cut your coast stay by 1 day & that would be a shame.

No, not really a good idea. Rome is fantastic, wonderful, lovely, beautiful, amazing, great and should be visited thoroughly, but spending eight hours travelling to stay there for two hours is not a good idea (check www.trenitalia.it, if you want to know train hours, from Napoli and add the time it takes you to get from Positano to Napoli). I would propose your friends to take the train from Rome to Napoli and meet in Napoli (maybe take a little appartment for one night, check www.romesweethome.com, or yahoo). I really loved it, but do be carefull where you go and do leave all jewelry at home if you want to be able to enjoy it carelessly. Avoid the Spanish quarters, but visit everything else.

Jennifer - You don't say whether you'll have a car or be using public tranport. Sure, either way you'd need to make an early start, - but logistically it is doable, especially if the plan is to stay the night in Rome. <BR><BR>Steve

Jennifer,<BR><BR>Two years ago we stayed in Ravello for 5 days. On our last day, our driver took us to Rome for the day. We were there for only 3 hours. We saw quite a few things in those 3 hours including walking through the doors of the Vatican for the Jubilee. Of course, we would have liked to stay longer, but it was better than nothing.<BR><BR>From Rome we actually had to drive right back to Naples to catch a flight. We hit bumper to bumper traffic, the driver drove along the side of the road and we barely got to the airport to catch the flight.<BR><BR>However, if this is your only oopportunity to go, I would do it. I'm glad we went. We still had a great time!

Hi Jennifer,<BR><BR>I would agree with the last post as we wwere able to make it from Rome to Positano and then heading back from ravello to Rome in about 3 hours each way. We had rented a car for the whole time and drove ourselves each way.

Jennifer,<BR><BR>Last year we hired a driver to take us from Positano to Rome which took just under three hours. You could also stop at Pompeii along the way, which is well worth visiting.
