Almafi Coast - Rome idea

Hello all, this is my first post here at Fodor's!

I am getting married January 30th and we planned our honeymoon during spring break (03/25 - 04/05) I live in Miami and speak english and spanish fluently. This helped me a lot each time I have visited Europe.

We are going to Italy for 10 days and I am very excited because the last time I was there was 10 years ago (BTW, throwing a coin backwards and over the shoulder into the Trevi fountain does bring you back!) and my fiance has never been.

We will start off in Venice for 3 days, stop at Florence for a day of sight seeing on our way down to Rome where we will be for 7 days.

The last time I was in Rome, I was there for 8 days and we spent a day to travel to Assisi. I would like to do something similar, but to Southern Italy. The location would have to fit into a 12-13 hour window because we want to return to sleep in Rome. I was thinking the Almafi coast because it shows you authentic Italy and the panoramas seem to be awesome. The mountainside towns in this region seem amazaing and I know it would be a great day trip. Can anyone in the Fordor's community provide any suggestions as to how to get there? I know that I can take the trenitalia from Rome to Naples (earlt morning) and then a regional train to Salermo from Naples, but I need advice from there. Is there any bus service that goes from Salermo through Almafi, Psitano, Ravello, Sorrento, and back?

Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for a day trip from Rome that can make you "feel" like an Italian, I would appreciate it. (Preferably on the Mediterranean coast) This is only if you disagree with being able to tour the Almafi Coast in a day trip. We are on a budget of course, so hydrofoils to Capri are out of the question, along with private tours or helicopter rides! lol.

Thanks in advance,

Take Trenitalia all the way to Salerno and a SITA bus from there to Amalfi, then another SITA bus from Amalfi to Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Naples, and finally Trenitalia back to Rome. It's doable in a day, even if you have lunch somewhere. Ravello is not on the route; it's a separate bus from Amalfi that you may or may not have time for, depending on the schedule.

Don't try to do this between Friday and Monday of Easter weekend.

Do this in a day is really hard, especially without a car. The Amalfi coast has so many sights and towns... I recommend you to go to Capri from Naples with the regular Aliscafo. The price is E 9.20 (http://www.capritourism.com/en/timetable-and-prices. You can cover the island in a day and still manage to go back to Rome. Yes, Capri can be touristy but its wonderful. And pricewise its the same as the Amalfi Coast.
Other nice options include Frascati, Tivoli and Castel Gandolfo, much closer to Rome.

Thanks for the responses. I will take the Capri suggestion and digest it. What is there to do at Capri (suggest a locale for a romantic lunch) and what the deal with the "Blue Grotto?"

You can catch the early IC train at 7:34 from Rome to Salerno (no change in Naples required) which arrives Salerno at 10:16. Catch the bus to Amalfi to look around and maybe have lunch or on to Positano for a later lunch before catching the bus to Sorrento. The train between Sorrento and Naples runs every 30 minutes so you don't need to worry about time so much. The last fast train from Naples back to Rome is a 9:30.

Trains Rome/Naples or Rome/Salerno.

I've been to Capri the end of March before, but you can't always count on ferries or seas not being rough. If you go to Capri be sure to buy a return ticket and find out the last return ferry as they don't run late.

The Blue Grotto is nice however the boatman that take you inside it are not. They will rush in and out, some of them will sing (very badly) and will demand a tip. I'd skipp the grotto since you are so time constricted.
