thanks Katie, two fodorite/friends of mine and I met Clotilde here in Boston where we tasted a few bites of her recipes. I look forward to her new book where to eat and food shop in Paris coming out in 2008.

Looks great, Katie H! Though I'm surprised Cote de France didn't make the Paris chocolate list. It was one of two chocolatiers featured along with Hevin on the Paris Walks chocolate tour, and my friend from Belgium and I agreed that their ganache was the best we've ever had.

Also, I would kill for a "Paris Bargain Shopping" thread.

Thanks for posting and for the fantastic site!

Hi slangevar---
I'll send the Côte de France recommendation on to the editors; sometimes it just is a matter of space. But from your recommendation it sounds like a don't miss.

I too would really like a bargain shopping thread. I bet there's probably one on here; I'll fish around. We might have to start our own. I visited Paris this past spring; I was blown away by the clothing prices (thanks to the crappy exchange). Dining well is a much bigger priority for me; so my shopping budget is always tiny. On a return I'd like to buy something special (but not really expensive). I'd like to know where to go to buy hand made jewelry; something like the vendors on Spring and Prince street in New York.

Excellent! I'll look forward to your ideas and post any I find over the next couple of weeks. I'm already on the prowl for inexpensive, high-quality, interesting clothing, jewelry and trinket shops.

First stop: a vintage shop I saw on the Rue de Rosiers during a Paris Walks tour today...

P.S. No kidding about the crappy exchange rates! Though even a British woman on our tour was joking about having to sell her jewelry to afford the clothes in Paris. I guess Marks and Spencer is a bit cheaper.

In Paris? Yes... until the 14th of September when they pry me out of my 6th-floor Marais apartment.

From my secret of Paris newsletter;

You can still find some vintage corsets and
underthings at Delphine B. (Marché Vernaison, on the main street at 137 Rue des
Rosiers, St-Ouen) and Francine Dentelles (Stand 121-123 and 140 bis, allée n°7).
There is also some things at the Marché Delphine on rue des Rosiers

Thanks, cigalechanta! Hmm... I wonder if one of those was the store I saw today on my tour. I'll have to check them out tomorrow.

I'm specifically trying to find somewhat trendy Parisian fashions and jewelry. Back in LA, I would go to Crossroads (the one in West Hollywood), Abbot Kinney in Venice or Melrose Avenue. All have cutting-edge fashions for under $50. Arg... I just wish I'd shopped more when I was in Japan. The exchange rate was incredible and the clothes were cheeaaapppp!

Clotilde Dusoulier is the author of "Chocolate & Zucchini", not the reverse as you have it. Her excellent blog is at www.chocolateandzucchini.com

While it seems a little surprising that the URLs to these items are/were not listed in the original posting by Katie (I suppose that they really want us to read them through e-subscribing to the newsletter)...

http://www.fodors.com/wire/archives/002706.cfm

"New and Noteworthy in Paris for the Week of 8/27"

http://www.fodors.com/wire/archives/002703.cfm

"In Paris, a Season of Celebration"

http://www.fodors.com/wire/archives/002713.cfm

"Paris Hotels Under 200 Euros Per Night"

(note: the hotel item listed above is the focus of another, separate thread - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...p;tid=35059163 to be specific)

http://www.fodors.com/wire/archives/002708.cfm

"Paris Like a Local"

and

http://www.fodors.com/wire/archives/002705.cfm

"Paris Shopping 101"

- - I am not posting here to grouse about listing or not listing the URLS - - but rather...

... a challenge to any and all Fodorites who have been to Paris lately: can you validate, augment or contest some of these recommendations?

I am especially interested in their recommendations (in "Paris Like a Local&quot under

* Drink Coffee Like a Parisian

Café de Flore (172 bd. St-Germain, 6th, 01-45-48-55-26)

* Eat Baguettes Like a Parisian

Arnaud Delmontel (39, rue des Martys, 01-48-78-29-33)

Jean-Pierre Cohier (270, rue du Faubourg St-Honoré, 01-42-27-45-26)

and

Boulanger de Monge (No.123 rue Monge).

and last of all,

* Eat Pastries Like a Parisian

Ladurée (16 rue Royale, 8th, 01-42-60-21-79)

Gérard Mulot (76 rue de Seine, 6th, 01-43-26-85-77)

Pierre Hermé (72 rue Bonaparte, 6th, 01-43-54-47-77)

Lenôtre (61 rue Lecourbe, 15th, 01-42-73-20-97)

Fauchon (26 pl. de la Madeleine, 8th, 01-47-42-60-11)

I know that Ladurée gets a lot of press here on the forum - - in fact, everyone of these places is mentioned by a Fodorite on http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34866878 - - but for you with really recent experience under your belt (perhaps loosened up a notch!) - - have the Fodor's editors gotten it right with these picks?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Best wishes,

Rex

Hi Rex,
I guess I was a little lazy not including all of the original links. I just included the newsletter link because from there you can just pick and choose what you want to read (without signing up for the newsletter).

You can click on any of the stories by going to this address:
http://www.fodors.com/newsletter/index.html

That url points to the most recent newsletter; so it will change this Thursday. And for that, I'm grateful that you included all of the individual links. Thanks!

Thanks for adding those other suggestions too.
