Alanya or Side

Hi all,

I'm thinking of an autumn break in either Alanya or Side in southern Turkey.

Which would you recommend? What did you like (- or dislike) about either?

Thanks for any pointers

Steve

I have been to both but those were about ten years ago. Based on that time experiences I would go to Side. But be aware that there are masses of tourists in both places.

I prefer Side because there are (or at least were) old wooden houses and some kind of "village" feeling. Also the beach was better.

Dear Steve,

I do agree with Elina. Both places are packed with tourists. For the past 5 years Alanya has turned into Al(m)anya. By the way, "Almanya" means "Germany" in Turkish. So it is more than an addition of the letter "m" to Alanya. You can see more Germans than Turks in the place. Although Side is almost as crowded as Alanya it still has its Greco-Roman character with its recently renovated theatre, agora, Roman Baths (Museum),Temple of Apollo etc. Since the town is located on a peninsula, you have the choice of beaches on either side depending on the direction of the wind. If I were to choose, I would go for Side.

With all good wishes.

Thanks to both of you. Side sounds nice - now it's time to start some research

I'm not going till October - so hopefully it won't be too crowded by then. Just hope I'm not too late to find some nice weather ...

Thanks again.

Steve,

October sounds better as far as crowds are concerned. As for the weather, still warm enough (around 25-28 C) to sunbathe and swim. If you have any problems just let me know. I always carry the sunshine in my pocket and I am in very good terms with the Weather God of Hatti and the Sun Goddess of Arinna. I will send them to bring joy, happiness and sunshine to you in Side.

Enjoy your stay.

AsiaM - Arinna would be nice - can she stay for 2 weeks?

If not, any goddess will do ...

Steve,

I have just talked to both of them. They guarantee 11 days of sunshine and fine weather. They cannot guarantee the remaining 3 days. It may be a bit windy/stormy and rainy during those 3 days but still very warm. How do you like the deal?

P.S. Do not forget to send me an account of weather report after you return home. Don't forget I said 11+3

With all good wishes

Neither Anatolian Cruiser nor Asia_Minor did not speak to me about the weather but for the sake of the nice sounding Steve I will give a 12 days sunshine in full.....

Happy Travelling,
Murat
