I usually stay either in Limerick City or in Ennis my last night. Shopping is a little better in Limerick because of its size. I like Irish Handicrafts in the Arthur's Quay mall. They do 'on the spot' VAT refunds. Keep in mind that there is no VAT on children's clothing. So you don't get any 'deals' at Shannon's Duty Free shops. Ennis has some nice shops too including Beleeks.
Both have pretty convenient BusEireann transport to Shannon (4-Euros). From Ennis, there's a bus about 9:30AM direct to Shannon. I've caught one at 7:45 AM from Limerick and another about 8:30AM. On the schedule it says 45-min but it usually takes less than that. I like Ennis because Cruise's Pub has Traditional Irish music every night.
My last trip (May'03) I flew US Airways Philadelphia to Shannon and back. The new International Terminal at PHL sucks! It's about a mile from the Terminal B check-in to the departure gates. Get there 3-hours early!
I travelled BusEireann to Galway and on to Ballina and Belmullet (County Mayo). When I came back the Ennis Spring music fest was in full swing. In Ennis there's the Old Ground (a golden oldie), the Temple Gate (where I've stayed a couple of times) and the Queens Hotel (where I stayed once). All have restaurants and full Irish breakfast is included in the room rate.
