Airplane Costs
I'm leaving for Italy from Seattle in the second half of June this year. I've never priced flights to Europe before... I have no real idea of how much they should cost.

Right now, I can get a plane into London for slightly under $700 (and then try and figure out how to get to Rome from there) which is better than I've seen in the two months that I've been looking. But is it actually good? Should I grab this while I can, or if I wait, will the prices go down?

Any guesses?

Thanks

I'm in Seattle too and $700 is pretty good for June. I usually end up with $600ish in May.

British Air is having a sale until midnight tonight. I got $860 from Seattle to Barcelona in July. You might want to try the site but it has had some trouble today.

http://www.britishairways.com

Be sure to click on the ad on the right that says $99 and $49 first, then price your trip.

Wendy

For all but the big east coast cities, $700 is very good-to-excellent for June. Buy it.

Interstingly, Seattle is not always more expensive than the midwest.

If you can go ahead and price your through-travel to Rome, all the better. But there are a lot of low-priced flights from London to Rome. And the more you research your trip, you just might decide that some time in England - - front end or back end or both would suit your travel plans.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
Today is the last day of the British Airways sale, which I think would allow you to get to London far cheaper, or all the way to Rome for certainly no more than $700. Give them a call or try their website. If you want to fly into Rome and out of Venice (or wherever else - this is called "open jaw"
ask about that, it should cost about the same and will save you the time and expense of backtracking.

And/or do a text search here for "fare" to pull up some recent threads with websites for consolidator fares.

AlphaBeta,
I just checked for you on Travelocity.
During that time you can get R/T to London from Seattle for $395 on British Airways, Lufthansa, and Continental.
Also
You can fly R/T to Rome for $521 on Lufthansa, or $537 on American, Northwest, Delta, KLM and United.

So you can just go direct or you can fly to London and take a commuter like Easyjet to Rome. I believe Easyjet flies from Stansted to Rome at that tiem for about 65 GBP round trip.

So $700 is too much. Shop around!

AlphaBeta: Rex says "$700 is very good-to-excellent for June" - this is NOT true. I also live on the west coast and often fly to Europe in Jume. The MOST I have ever paid in coach including taxes is $630, and this year there are a lot of deals out there. So I would not expect ro pay more than about $500/$550 RT to London and maybe $600 to Rome. Quinty has found you even better fares - so my estimates would be the most you should have to pay.

I said for most of the country. I think it was my mistake that I did not spell out that I have never purchased ANY tickets from the West coast to Europe.

Your ability to find these bargains would fall under the excellent-to-exceptional classification for the parts of the country I know best. You quote $630 as a representative fare (not sure how much lower you have found in June) in prior years were perhaps $50 lower than they seem to be this year. AlphaBeta has already found $690 something.

The BA fares end today. I would not feel right telling someone to let them pass by, waiting for something better to come along, in the hopes of saving $60 or less. The flip side of the coin could be NEVER finding fares, with the exact hoped for dates at a price anywhere near this good.

This is not an argument. I am not challenging anything you have said. I am merely further explaining the basis for my opinions.
Rex - I also do not want an argument. But - you said "For ALL (my emphasis) but the big east coast cities, $700 is very good-to-excellent for June. Buy it."

Since you now admit you have never bought a ticket from the West coast, you had no idea if $700 is "excellent" or not.

I really thought I had the necessary experience shopping for tickets from parts of the country other than NYC, BOS, WAS, PHL, etc. (And I do know a fair amount about buying tickets from those locations as well).

I regret if my advice was(is) an example of a question I should not have answered.
I think that on the heels of the BA sale, all of a sudden there are sale fares (for May at least, maybe June also) popping up hither thither and yon.

RDU-LON (simple RT) much lower than I could find just about ten days ago - - and RDU-VIE/LON-RDU for essentially no more!

Alas, we felt the need to book when we did. And still, I think I am happy about the total amount paid for the five fares (four of which were with NWAcertificates); there's something to be said for meeting up in Amsterdam before continuing on to Vienna.
