I posted this topic in the Airlines forum too but this forum gets more ativity so I am posting here also. Sorry. I want to book a specific flight from Houston on Air France going to Rome. The connecting flight is on Alitalia with a 1 hour and 35 minute connection. If there is an issue and we miss the flight, who would be responsible for getting us there. I know they are partnered now. There is an AF connecting flight with an hour and 15 minute connection for $200 more but I see no point in this if both get me the same guarantee. Also, kinda worried about luggage with such tight connections but I do realize luggage mishaps can happen at any time. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Do AF offer the Alitalia flight as an option on their website, so you end up on a single ticket? If so they will be responsible for getting you on another flight if you miss that one.
If you are on two tickets then no, AF have nothing to do with it, and aren't responsible for getting you and or your baggage to Rome.

We have always looked for the shortest connection time, but after an experience in Dallas a couple of years ago - we almost missed our flight - we have changed our philosophy. Now we look for at least. a 2 hr break. You get to stretch your legs and are relieved of anxiety. There's only a 20 min difference in those flights of yours. Big deal. And they want you to pay $200 for the shorter connect time ?? I think you know the answer to your question.

I echo what hetismij2 says. I wouldn't do the connecting flight on a different airline unless it can be booked on the same ticket. Can you check both AF and Alitalia's sites and see if either one can book both flights on the same ticket?

I have experienced enough delays, troubles with connecting flights, luggage being misrouted etc. to count on connecting flights booked on different tickets going smoothly.

It is booked and paid on the same ticket on the Air France website. Thank you so much for your replies. Unfortunately there is a 4 hour layover and my husband does not want to do this. So, we are left with this option.

Well, you get in 85 minutes late, you go downstairs and have a shower, then you grab a proper meal then you check in for the flight. 4 hours fly by

I don't quite understand the question, but it sounds like you can book an AF ticket from Houston to Rome (which will have a change in Paris, of course, either a short one of a little over an hour or a 4 hr one) or you can book a flight to Paris on AF and book a separate flight on Alitalia which also has a short layover. Do not do the second, you will be out of luck if you don't make the connection and I don't even want to guess who will be responsible for getting you your bags if that happens or if you have to maybe transfer them yourself.

It sounds like you want to do the Alitalia because that will be $200 cheaper than the entire way on AF, which I find very surprising given AF is always pretty cheap, and their connections are also. Alitalia isn't very reliable, anyway, from what I've heard.

If they are really partners and its a codeshare, it would be an AF ticket so that would be okay but then you'd be booking it all on the AF website and they would be responsible if you didn't make the flight and your bags. I don't really understand whether it is or not as you say it is but then you say it's a 4 hr connection when the OP said both AF and Alitalia had a little over an hour connection.

If I were going to book a different flight because it was cheaper, I'd go really cheap, such as Easyjet. I like them a lot and they have flights from Paris to Rome for less than 50 euro and they have several on some days.

The flight is booked on the Air France website but says that this portion is operated by Alitalia. There is no Easyjet service from CDG to Rome on March 2. There are 2 early flights one is Air France connection in Paris for $200 more than the Alitalia connection. Both are available on the Air France website.
