Need Advice for Getting Bumped off an Air France Flight

We will be traveling to Italy later this year. Our return flight departs Rome & we change planes in Paris, then fly non-stop back to Seattle. We would like to try & get bumped off the Paris to Seattle flight so we can have a day in Paris and come home the next day.

Has anyone ever done this? How do we let Air France know that we would like to be bumped?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you!

I know nothing about being bumped but would it just be easier to change your return flight? I know it would cost something..maybe too much? Is that the problem?

You can't plan on getting bumped. If the flight is oversold, you can offer to get bumped but that doesn't necessarily mean you will be bumped to next days flight. AF can put you on another carrier the same day and offer some compensation, but don't ever think there is a guarantee of ANYTHING happening until the day of travel, unless like the above poster stated, purchase a different ticket.

That's the ONLY time you will be guaranteed ANYTHING!

Airlines run a very sophisticated software that tells them how many seats can be sold on any given flight without running into oversold problem. There are times where the software fails to predict correctly and they will offer compensation in return for waiting for the next flight available, either with that airline, or another, but the airlines will never allow you to "plan" a bump.

Have a great trip!

I already called the airline (NWA booked our flights, but the return trip is on Alitalia & Air France). I asked them to see how much it would cost and it was $1000 per person to change the ticket. There are two of us travelling.

We just thought it would be great to 'get stuck' in Paris for a day.

When you check in for your flight in Rome, you can tell the agent of your availability to be bumped. Then he or she might tell you if there is any hope for that at all. But - as nice as it would be if all went off according to your dream - the odds are pretty low.
