Advice on trip to Pompeii from Rome
Hello there ...
My boyfriend and I are planning to travel to Rome at the end of March and would like to take a day trip to Pompeii. We're not sure if we pre-reserve a tour before we go or if there is a train we could take on our own and go from there. Any advice and guesses on how long the trip is and how much it might cost us to get there?
Thanks
-Christine

You can day trip to Pompeii from Rome.
It is however a long day trip.
The way I remember it, from Naples you fing the circum-venusian train (commuter service for metro Naples).
My favorite website for train schedules is Die Bahn. Find their English language website.

There are a lot of posts on this topic, just do a search for them. It will take you about three hours to get to Pompeii from Rome via Naples and two trains.
Enjoy Rome has a round trip shuttle from Rome to Pompeii for 55 euro per adult.
There are also several organized tours which start at about 100 euro.
