Ado you recommend an overnight stop between Wolfgangsee and Vienna?

My husband and I are planning for a September trip planned to Austria and some Germany. Our itinerary is:

Sept 10 Fly into Munich, train to Salzburg and pick up car
Sept 10-12 Stay Salzburg and visit Bertschgarden area as well
Sept 13-14. Stay Wolfgangsee and visit Lake Hallstatt area as well
Sept 15. Drive towards Vienna - but where to stay?????????
Sept 16-18. Drive to Vienna and drop off car. Stay in Vienna and visit Melk, Krem areas as well
Sept 19. Train to Munich and stay one night during Ocktoberfest

Is there somewhere to stop for one Night in between Wolfgangsee and Vienna? Or should we just add another night to Vienna? Any small town that is lovely to visit or an interesting site to see? Or if we stay another night in Vienna should we visit brought Bratislava?

We have most accommodations reserved except for Vienna. We will need washer and dryer at that point so we are looking for an apartment to rent. Does anyone have any recommendations for two people?

Thanks for your help!

Pardon my bad grammar and typing, typing on my iPad is not as easy as using my keypad!

Why not stay in the Melk/Krem area on the way to Vienna?

Agree with elberko. In all our travels, Melk Abbey ranks as high as almost any place we have visited.

Of your options, I would overnight somewhere in the Wachau en route to Vienna. Tour Melk, enjoy the vineyards and a heuriger dinner, and then head to Vienna the following morning.

Thanks for the advice. I guess no one is recommending any stops south of Vienna, which is what I was fishing for. If we go to the Wachau area for that one night, where would you recommend staying?

Then, it would most likely free up on of the Vienna days, so would you recommend a day trip to Bratislava?

Also, we are close to booking an apartment at Kurrentgasse 10, A-1010 Vienna. Is this a good location for a first time visitor to Vienna?

Thank you again!!

I am afraid I can not offer lodging advice; we drive or cycle in the Wachau. Durnstein has a couple of hotels (with parking!), though. And, FYI, the parking lot is large at Melk.

As for the Vienna location, it is about a 5 minute walk from Stephansplatz (with two U-Bahn connections). The location is also, I believe, in a restricted access area, so it would be best to drop the car first.

With 2.5 days in Vienna, I wouldn't consider a day outing to Bratislava.
