A first time trip to Venice first week of November -have enjoyed so much the postings of past trips -we plan to drive to Bergamo or is this impossible due to all the water? Must we leave from the airport ?

Venice is auto-free, you take the public boats which operate like buses (vaporetto).
If you come by car you park your car in a giant parking garage on an island called Tronchetto. Or you take the ferry to the Lido.
Do I understand that you are flying into Venice? If yes, spend your days without car in Venice. Then rent a car and drive over the bridge to Bergamo. Driving time is 2:15.
If you want to look up the map enter www.viamichelin.com. Use the zoom function for Venice and you will see the bridge from Venice to the mainland.

Well, it IS tricky to start off from St Mark's Square, unless you can find someone who hires out DUKWs.
But there's a clutch of car hire companies at Piazzale Roma, the hideous mass of multistorey car parks and other modern-world horrors at the Mestre end of the causeway that links historic Venice to the real world.
From there it's a painless - if aesthetically dismal - drive onto the Italian motorway system and on to Bergamo.

At the end of the causeway going from the mainland towards Venice is the Piazzele Roma - which has several car rental agencies, large garages, a water taxi pickup spot and a vaporetto stop.
Assuming you are doing Venice at the beginning of the trip you go from the airport to your hotel by boat.
When you're ready to leave Venice pick up you car at Piazzele Roma (naturally you reserve before you leave home).

Hi
We drove to a hotel in Venice that was near the bus station. It had aparking lot. Unfortunately I can't recall the name it was about 8 yrs. ago. It was the only hotel with a parking lot and it was on the edge of Venice. great location, nice hotel, I remember too.
