Where do you park you car for Venice?
We're going to be driving (Hertz rental) from Salzburg to Venice. I was reading a couple of hotel sites where they mentioned a couple of parking garages and that you must leave the car unlocked and the keys in the car. Is this true of all the garages/parking places? Since we will have more "stuff" than we will need in Venice, my plan was to leave the extras in the car and use a small pack of some sort.

Are you staying in Venice? If so, you can drive the causeway into the edge of Venice and drop the car there. The car rental agencies are in Piazzale Roma near a vaporetto stop.
If you are planning a day trip to Venice, you can park in the large garage at the entrance to the city (the Trnchetto). However, you are strongly advised not to leave anything of value in the car.

Hi lydia, it sounds like you will be staying a night or more in Venice. Do not leave anything in your car while it is parked that you do not want stolen. The garages are at Piazzale Roma which is at the end of the causeway that takes you to Venice. As annoying as it will be I would empty out your car and take everything with you to your hotel in Venice.

We drove our car into the garage at the end of the causeway turning right( bypassed the conman trying to divert us to the water taxi by claiming the boats were not running)then we discretely left our food box and souvenirs in the trunk, took out our rollers and locked up.There was no one around and we decieded to walk across the bridge into the island.. It was not too far at all to the dock for the grand canal boat..you have to cross again ...on the way back we took the boat from st marks straight to the parking garage.. Very simple and we had no trouble..we left a local paper in the front seat..
