A sincere question about pickpockets

My response to her concerning the prisons was to inform her that a person is "NOT SAFE" in this country. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, there are bad guys in this country. The California prisons are an true example of that problem and many can pick your pocket too.

The OP says he keeps "my wallet in my pocket or my iPhone in the side pocket of a bag". I wouldn't suggest doing that in any city, regardless.
I nearly had my wallet lifted neatly out of my zipped purse in Venice. Luckily, I felt a slight tug and looked around to see two young men feining innocence. But my purse, which was over my shoulder and securely held, had been unzipped. Very professional.
I also had professional thieves take my purse out from between my feet at the FAO Schwarz in NYC. I didn't even notice someone come near me, as I examined a toy on the shelf, with my purse on the floor between my feet. The purse was gone without a trace, as quick as can be. Only good thing was the thief took the cash and left the purse in a shop down the street, whose owner found me to return it.

I was shopping for shoes the other day in my hometown suburb's Macys. I noticed a young man sitting in the chair that backed up to mine. It seemed strange, his arm was draped over my chair. Then the light went off in my head, he was waiting for me to stand up and go over to the little mirror and leave my purse on my chair.
I leaned over towards him and said, you are wasting your time, I am taking my purse with me every time I go over to the mirror.
He gave me a look that could kill and ran off.
