Where is safe to go in Europe for 2 weeks
Planning to use two United tickets for any European city won last year. Concerned about mad cow's disease & recent anti-american sentiments in all those countries. Heard about people being treated rudely in France or scammed in Italy. Is there an area that appreciates & welcomes Americans not just for our dollars but for what we have done for them in the second world war, Marshall Plan & NATO.

"Is there an area that appreciates & welcomes Americans not just for our dollars but for what we have done for them in the second world war, Marshall Plan & NATO."

Does United run a time machine?

Seriously, you go on holiday to get away from your worries, to expand your horizons, to break out of limited mindsets and really enjoy a new culture and different way of life, even if only briefly. Go anywhere in Europe and you'll meet people who want to talk with you about the US - people who've visited or are planning to visit your city/area, people who have friends or family in the US, people who are just curious about how you live. Talk with them like human beings, and if you get around to the second world war, the Marshall Plan or NATO, listen to them with an open mind - you might learn something.
You're joking, right.......not to depart from the topic at hand (amazing sights, lots of history and culture, new people to meet, etc.), but it's that attitude that creates such anti-american feelings.....get off your high horse......some people in Europe most likely are resentful towards Americans simply because of their "we are the best, we are "it" attitude", and no wonder.....maybe if more U.S. residents travelled with more of an open mind, they wouldn't receive such average treatment. Oh, and by the way, it's not just Americans that are victims of theft, violence or bad treatment. Speaking of WWII - did you fight in the war?
Try the Netherlands. Many of the older citizens still remember Eindhoven and Operation Market Garden with profound gratitude. The Dutch were very appreciative of the Yanks, both for their military valor and their courteous conduct with the citizenry. Hopefully, some of them still have a soft spot for the progeny of their liberators of yore.

What a shame that so many of you are so impatient. Did you ever stop to think that maybe this person is older and leery about travelling abroad. Being on vacation in a strange country when you're 75 years old is MUCH different than when you're young! Not only do people take advantage of you (yes, this happens in the US as well) but you just can't handle yourself physically as well as younger people can.

I've been all over Europe and never had any problems. Just be appreciative, interested in learning and open to new experiences. Please don't go with an attitude of American superiority or you will have trouble.

I wouldn't worry about mad cows disease unless you plan on spending time on farms.

Try visiting Switzerland. It's easy to navigate and the people are great.

On a side note, don't bring up WWII. It's old news and you will open up a can of worms. Not that our help wasn't appreciated, but we were a little late getting to the party. So to speak. Non Americans get a little tired of hearing how great we are etc. With an open mind you'll be amazed at the things our European neighbors could teach us.
