A Few Days for Stockholm/Bergen

My wife and I will be taking a Baltic cruise that ends in Stockholm. We arrive in Stockholm on Monday July 12 and disembark from the ship on the morning of July 13. Our return flight to the U. S. is from London on the morning of July 16. We are considering taking the train from Stockholm to Bergen on the 13th and taking a flight from Bergen to London on the 15th.

I would appreciate any comments/suggestions. Also, does anyone know where we might find information on the train schedule to get us from Stockholm to Bergen? Any problem getting from Bergen to London?

Though I have never traversed Sweden/Norway, I helped plan such a trip with/for my mother years ago. This is a hefty distance - - one would that I would not undertake in one trip - - five hours (by train) from Stockholm to Oslo, and then seven hours further to Bergen.

Not cheap either.

You can fly cheaper on www.norwegian.no - - but unfortunately, they do not have a good connection (over six hours connect time in Oslo airport.

As a result, the optimum might be train to Oslo (depart 12:00, arrive 16:53), then fly to Bergen (depart 18:30 or 19:30, arrive 50 minutes later). Might be cutting it very close Oslo airport to train station for that 18:30 flight (I do not know Oslo at all).

To get back to London, Norwegian operates service from Bergen to London (Stansted), or if you have any interest in travelig the west coast of Norway, there is a 3 hr "Norway coast Bus" to Haugesund - - looks like it _could_ be very scenic - - Ryanair flies from there.

Best wishes,

Rex

That's a pretty tall order. I would spend the time in and around Stockholm and then catch a flight to London. They might have an overnight train from Stockholm to Bergen - but then you have to get to London. Seems difficult to me.

I haven't been either, but I've been doing some research about it. SAS flies between Stockholm and Bergen, and the connection is not too bad -- see http://www.scandinavian.net/26272/APRSE.pdf . Not sure how expensive this is for you. I was thinking about the flight coupons they offer, but you probably need to fly SAS or an affiliated airline to Europe, and you may not be doing this.

By the way, the fly to Oslo, then train to Bergen option may not be so unpalatable, because the train ride from Oslo to Bergen is supposedly extremely scenic (do a search on "Norway in a Nutshell" about this). If you're too tired, fly to Oslo and then take the train from Oslo to Bergen.

Or, you can do the Norway in a Nutshell train trip starting and ending in Bergen. It is still very beautiful and is a day trip that includes the train and boat on the fjord. Book in advance of arriving.

Thanks to everyone for the information. We've decided that Bergen may be a bit too much for the time we have available. We are thinking that we might instead go over to Visby for a day or go back to London and spend a couple of days there before returning to the U. S.
