8 nights in sweeden + denmark
I'm going to Copenhagen for a conference at the beginning of October, since I've never been to Scandinavia before I decided to book an open jaw flight into Stockholm (from Montreal) and out of Copenhagen. I have 3 nights before the conference starts. Should I just do 3 nights in Stockholm and take train to Copenhagen, or should I drive with a rental car and spend 1 night somewhere in-between? and if so where?

Although it depends on your interests, I think most people would find more than enough to keep them happily entertained in Stockholm for 3 days, but I hope you are also allowing yourself some time in Copenhagen!
If an overnight train is still an option, you might consider that.

I have asked this question of several Swedes through the years. They all said don't drive. Too boring.</i>
I drove from Stockholm to Copenhagen years ago. It's like driving through western Michigan with farm houses, big boulders, and pine trees. But I found one interesting place, the glass making villages of Kosta, Boda, and Orrefors. One of them allowed visitors to watch the working glass blowers from an elevated gallery. The "seconds" shop had decorative glass and tableware at very low prices. I bought a number of items which are hardly distinguishable from the items in high-end stores.

Hi,
Welcome to Denmark!
I would split my time between the cities, 2 nights each city. If you have any time of at the conference in Copenhagen and can do a bit of sigthseeing, then I would stay a little longer in stockholm.
I would fly from Stockholm, it takes an hour and can be very cheap, try norwegian.com or www.sas.dk
Happy travelling

We drove from Stockholm to Copenhagen in 2010 and it was a very rural countryside. We stopped in Jonkoping: https://maps.google.com/maps?client=...ed=0CAoQ_AUoAg.
We drove in August. I wonder if the weather in October will be a factor in what you would be able to see while driving. My recommendation would be the train or a plane.
Both cities have a lot to offer. I would prioritize your time in Stockholm over driving across Sweden.
