how does one find an apartment to rent in these countries? are there companies that specialize in trips like this?

Unless you're an EU citizen or have a special visa, it can't be done.

Schengen countries (France and Italy) allow a maximum stay of 90 days within a period of 180 days.

I think it is an excellent idea if you can meet the Schengen requirements, which see.

You could do one month in each place (or some combination that would give you one month in London and 90 days total in Paris, Rome, Venice). Otherwise, as mentioned, you would need to get a visa for the Schengen area.

Re: apartments, you could start with VRBO.com, do a search by your dates and location.

As for "companies that specialize in trips like this" ... not sure what you mean? Is there something in particular you want to do in each one of these places? Or do you just mean a travel agency that will book your travel and lodging?

At least the UK is not part of the Schengen agreement. So you can linger in the UK and then spend three months in France and Italy and then either return to the Uk or go to Romania or Bulgaria.

There are numerous companies/organizations that rent apartments - but they are doing it for a profit. Travel agents won;t do this for you since it's a lot of work and companies/owners won't pay them a commission. You will need to do the work yourself. Suggest getting very good maps of each city in which you're interested - then read threads here about renting apts in London or rome - to see who has had good - or bad - experiences with which companies.

A couple of websites that I have had good luck for apartments:

www.homelidays.co.uk

www.holidaylettings.co.uk

Even though they sound like they are UK only they cover many many countries. Have used both several times with excellent results each time.

For Paris, search on this site for "Paris apartments" - there are several excellent websites recommended.

Try Homeaway.com and vrbo.com -- do a search for "long-term lets" and you may find other websites. We were seriously considering getting the long-stay visa to do 10 months, primarily based in SW France, but then some family issues came up that changed that. However, we spend a month checking out potential apartments (assuming we'd be staying at least 3 months, possibly 6 in one, and traveling the rest of the time). I was pleasantly surprised that almost every single place we saw was better than the website. You usually can get in touch with the owners and ask questions about what is included/not included in rentals (like utilities, parking, etc).
