we liked the hotel platzl very much--large rooms, good storage. it's just a block off the marienplatz. if you want a splurge, the bayerischerhof is one of the best.

You may also want to look for zimmers, which are German B&Bs. They're much more culturally intimate and Munich should have some in good locations at a fraction of the cost of a hotel.

We enjoyed staying at the Konigshoff, which also has a wonderful restaurant. It's just across the street from Karlsplatz.

The Acanthus (listed in Karen Brown's Guides) is another nice hotel and unlike some is air conditioned.

I really enjoyed the Admiral Hotel, a smaller place with a very good staff, a nice breakfast, and parking for my rental car. It's not directly in the city center, but the walk to Marienplatz couldn't be more than 8-10 minutes. Good luck.

Intrepid1...

Thanks for the tip..... I checked out the Acanthus site and it looks great! Price looks good too.
My plans have changed and am staying in Munich 2 extra days... my bids on Priceline.com were rejected today... I can't bid again until Saturday and I leave for Europe on Sunday..... so don't have much time to get the rooms set up.

Wayne... thanks again for all your help. I really wanted to drive to Paris, but the recent snow storms have scared me off. I'll be taking the train to Paris.

Several near the train station come to mind. Drei Lowen, Drei Lowen Residence, La Meridian, Deutsches Theater, and a little further away the Uhland (a great place near the Octoberfest grounds). Our favorite is the Drei Lowen or the DL Residence around the corner.

If you check out OctopussTravel.com you can see pictures of the rooms and the hotels.

You don't have a place to stay, yet? And you're leaving in a few days?

Budman..........
It's complicated... HA!
I was waiting to see what the weather was actually going to do just before leaving.
I booked 1 night in Munich several weeks ago. I booked 3 nights in Paris. So.. I had the beginning and end of the trip all taken care of. I had my "driving route" and places to stay all figured out.. but did not make any reservations for in-between Munich and Paris. Plan B has always been, "if the weather was bad", leave the car in Munich and take the train to Paris.

I've been PM-ing with Iceman and the weather has been so bad, they've been cancelling 50% of the flights into Munich. He tells me that the Alpine Ski Worldcup in Oberstdorf was CANCELLED, due to the snow storms... so the only problem with Plan B was, no reservations if I had to spend a couple extra nights in Munich.

Well, good luck to you -- I hope things work out. Post a trip report and let us know how things went.

Things will be fine....... as long as we don't freeze........I'll post pics etc..... when I return.

Once I made up my mind to take the train and bought the tickets... I logged back into Priceline.com and tried bidding the same zones for these 2 extra days. I got rejected both times. I had my girlfriend log in and use her VISA... she got rejected both times.

The hotel Acanthus sounds pretty good.. but there isn't any "sweet priceline discount". I have to wait until Saturday before I can bid priceline again... if I get rejected, I'll just book Acanthus..... have a bier and get on with it!
