Any suggestions on what to see in Frankfurt. My husband is only there for 24 hours and is staying by the airport.

try searching the threads...we have been talking about Frankfurt a lot lately and it gets rather boring typing the same thing over and over!!!! Also, maybe some general interests such as museums or architecture, etc... would give us something to work on. Plus if he's staying at the airport he is centrally located so he could train to some more interesting places if that was of interest to him....is it a layover or will he be on business in Frankfurt and needs things to do on the off time? Just let us know something more specific and we can be more specific in our responses.

The British and Americans bombed Frankfurt to bits in Hitler?s war, so Mainz is the more attractive city. It is the same distance from Frankfurt airport as Frankfurt.<BR><BR>Ben Haines, London

Agree with Ben that Mainz is a more attractive spot, a good place near Frankfurt airport for a short visit. The Romanesque Dom (cathedral) is very impressive, and the pedestrian zones around the cathedral are great for strolling and a little shopping. South of the Dom is a really nice park - the Stadtpark, with some beautifully cared for landscaping, an aviary and reptile house, a nice view of the Rhine, and a relaxing Biergarten. The Gutenberg Museum might be interesting, and the Marc Chagall windows at the Stephanskirche (church) are super.<BR>However, don't expect to find much in the way of well-preserved architecture - the Allies pretty much decimated Mainz in WWII as well. The only sector with a truly old feel to it lies just south of the Dom along the Augustinerstrasse (some nice cafes and wine bars in this area.)

True, Mainz is probably the nicer city, but Frankfurt has also some interesting places, the "Roemerplatz", a mediaeval square in the city center is nice, with the cathedral right next to it. You could take a walk along the Main river and have a look at the old opera. Both cities are very easy to reach from the airport with public transportation ("S-Bahn").

I think Frankfurt is a great city for 24 hours as is any major city like New York, etc. It is more of a modern city with some quaint neighborhoods. I suggest the Romer Dom downtowm near the Haupt Wache and the haupt wache for people watching. Also, Sachsen Hausen for more of a European feel (quaint streets, painted buildings, have him try an applewein while there...In the summer there are also boat rides/cruises on the Rhine River. He could take a 1/2 day or day trip along the Rhine to Rudelsheim perhaps. If he has a car he could perhaps go to the Taunus Mountains and walk or explore or perhaps Kongisburg. There is always something going on in Frankfurt.

Take the train to Coblenz and then take the boat or train down the Mosel and do some wine tasting.<BR><BR>But exit Frankfurt!<BR><BR>US

Personally I'd go shopping for shoes in Frankfurt. There are lots of lovely Italian-made shoes, usually on sale.
