1st Time in Paris - Latin Quarter vs. Eiffel Tower District

My husband and I (in our late 20s) are planning our first trip to Paris in September and are having a hard time deciding whether to stay in the Latin Quarter or the Eiffel Tower District (7th). Please help! Also, any hotel recommendations in either area would be great! Hoping to spend around $200/night. Thanks!!

I think you will prefer the Latin Quarter. The 7th is very quiet and residential. We stay in the 7th alot because we are older and prefer a quieter area for a good night's sleep. We've never stayed in the Latin Quarter so I cannot recommend a hotel. You can do a search here. Another good resource is the Tripadvisor website. IIt has tons of hotel reviews.

Hi G,

I think that you will be happier in the Marais (4th), Latin Quarter (5th) or St Germain de Pres (6th) than in the 7th.

Unless you want quiet.

While the low-numbered arrondissements are more central than the high-numbered ones, the 7th is very quiet/dull compared to the others, and you'll probably prefer the Latin Quarter.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Saint Jacques in the Latin Quarter in March.

Latin Quarter. Bars, restaurants, people watching into the wee hours...A fun atmosphere.

The first few times I visited Paris I stayed in the 7th by the Eiffel Tower. Like others have stated, its very quiet and there is nothing do after 10 o'clock at night. When my husband and I started staying in the 6th, we fell in love with Paris.

Personally, I'd split the difference and stay in the 6th. You can easily walk to the Latin Quarter, and, when you've had your fill, just as easily walk away.

Thanks for the great responses! We are now leaning away from staying in the 7th (unless pursuaded otherwise).

But now we are presented with a new decision: 6th vs. Latin Quarter? It sounds like we couldn't go wrong with either but any more thoughts would be much appreciated.

And any more specific hotel recommendations?

I really like the 6th more than the 5th. As suggested already, the 6th is so close in walking distance to the 5th that it's a great choice.

I prefer the 5th over the 6th, but if you want to spend $200 a night, it's the 6th. The 5th would be too cheap for you.

I'm not sure where the previous poster got that information from. There are quite a few hotels in the 6th that are inexpensive and do not cost $200/night.

We just returned from Paris. We rented a small apt. in the Latin Quarter across the Seine from Notre Dame. Seven years ago I stayed at the Hotel Des Grandes Ecoles, and my sister just stayed there in January. The hotel is in a quiet courtyard just a block from the Place de Contrescarpe and the colorful rue Mouffetard. It is within easy walking distance of Notre Dame, the Pantheon, etc. The hotel is recommended in various guidebooks.

I think the quiet of the VII is an asset. If you want to rock until midnight, do it in the LQ, then go home where you can sleep uninterrupted.

If you stay in the Marais or LQ, you don't have that choice.

We loved staying in the Latin Quarter and did not have any trouble with noise interrupting our sleep.

There are certainly locations in the Marais where you can get a good night's sleep and aren't rocking the night away. Unfortunately, the hotle I have stayed in there is way beyond your budget but I am certain there are plenty of people here who could recommend something.

Just don;t go away with the idea that the Marais is is some sort of "party central" area throughout because it certainly isn't.

I would agree that 6 or 5 would be better than 7th. It's dead at night, & 5th & 6th have better choices for restaurants, metro & buses, not to mention being closer to more of the sights you will be visiting. At your age I'm sure you'd like to walk a lot.The great thing about walking is that you get to discover the neighborhood better.

You don't say how long you are staying?

It's true that the 5th has a bigger selection of cheaper hotels, but with a budget of $200 that doesn't seem important for you. I can recommend a place that I stayed at, the Hôtel Henri IV Rive Gauche on rue Saint-Jacques in the 5th. The rooms are nice & many have a view of Saint-Severin, a Gothic church across the street. If you're high enough up you could also have a view of the Eiffel tower in the distance.
Search thru the parishotels website, I'm sure you'll find something!
