we recently read that credit cards were not being accepted due to excessive fraud. Could you update me please? ATM have been suggested, but I have a dollar limit in withdrawals.

credit cards were not being accepted -- Where - what country? For what?

we recently read - Where did you read this?

I have a dollar limit in withdrawals In general - you can go to your bank and have them raise your daily limit.

Give us more details and we can answer your concerns . . . . .

I don't know where you are going, but I think what you heard is wrong because people use credit cards in Europe every day.

I would like to suggest very kindly that when you post a thread, you should use a title that's a lot more specific, Be sure to include in your title the country you will be visitng. This will get the attention of people in the know and you will get a lot more help.

Penny,

Credit cards are still accepted.

Some parts of Europe have a different type of card then the US (a card with a chip built-in.) This can create confusion.

Some hotel and restaurant people want to keep the money that the credit card companies charge. Some cashiers will tell you that your card did not work just to avoid paying the transaction cost.

Tell your credit card company, when you are going and what countries you are going to. They should then deativate the fraud blocking per your instructions.

There are limits on ATM withdrawals (always have been). In Europe there is often is a limit per transaction, but you can make another transaction at the same machine immediately.
(The hotel does not take plastic, only euros. The hotel bill is 1,000E. There are daily limits on ATM withdrawals. It can be an adventure.)

Enjoy your trip.

I just returned from Italy---had no problem using my credit card (except when I accidently put it in an ATM machine and entered my ATM pin--a quick call to my credit card company cleared that up). DO call your credit card company before leaving so that they know you are out of the country, DO take more than one card. The only people that don't take credit cards are the street/market place vendors. ATM's are everywhere and I had no problem using mine even though my pin begins with "0" Have a great time!

I believe it is more related to ATM/Debit cards than credit cards. Always point your debit card to a checking account, not a savings account.

Here is an example of a 'lockdown' and a good reason why you should take 2 different cards:
