Windstar is over-ratred
I am going to cruise in Feb 2002. Windstar never told me of a 200 dollar on-board credit. They charged my credit card twice which messed up my card for three days. They have changed the itinerary twice and the cruise hasn't even sailed yet. Customer service has been of no help. And I haven't received my papers yet. Fodor's rates this as a higher grade cruise. Will let you know after the cruise if all the headaches before it were worth it

Windstar is a Great Cruise Line. That Credit is supposed to be Only for Clients of Travel Agents. Itinerary changes are due to problems which have occurred since 9/11. They are trying to go only to the safest ports.
Also your standard Cruise Contract, says they can change itinerary at Any time. This is clearly defined in the brochure and if you booked on line the Terms and Conditions. Too many people do not read the fine print. Some agents do not advise it for Fear of Losing the Sale.

Ernie,

Windstar (like other cruise lines since 9/11) have been changing their itineraries.
We sailed WindSurf in '00 and really enjoyed the ship, cabin, dining and staff. After we left port, we were told there was a change in itinerary. It was for the safety of the passengers; most didn't seem to mind.
We use a travel agent; have never booked directly through the cruiseline.
Enjoy your cruise. Bon Voyage!

The recent changes in itineraries recently announced by Windstar have NOTHING to do with safety or 9/11. The have made several changes in Carib. and Bahamas ports, in general moving from smaller more intimate stops to larger ones, that larger ships use. This is a disappointment to many people who picked Windstar to cruise on. I also don't think that anyone is questioning that Windstar has a legal right to do this. In fact, they have done this with NO explanation.

We recently cruised w/ Windstar (Wind Surf over New Year's), and there were 2 itinerary changes we were told about once we embarked. One on St. Vincent, and another one on Martinique (which was disappointing, since the reason they told us - that the smaller pier had hurricane damage - was a load of crap, as we later were told by the locals. The real reason was that it was a Saturday, so we spent the morning in FdFrance as well, and people could go shopping!!! But otherwise it was a great experience.

We just returned from the Wind Surf Bahamas itinerary. We had 2 port changes: we docked in Nassau rather than Salt Cay and Port Lucaya rather than Green Turtle Cay. We were told that we had to dock in Nassau b/c the current was too strong to anchor. Green Turtle Cay was changed b/c the waters surrounding it were too shallow and we could not get within 6 miles of the island.

Of course we, as most Windstar passengers, prefer the small, intimate destinations, but I cannot say that any of these change s effected the wonderful time we had on the cruise. The food, staff, and ship were all wonderful. We loved Bimini, Half Moon Cay, and Key West. We totally relaxed and enjoyed the whole trip. This is only the 2nd week they have been on this itineary so all of the passengers seemed to accept the changes. The staff welcomed our comments regarding the port changes. They are definitely trying to please.

Relax and enjoy the trip - Windstar is an excellent cruiseline and you won't be disappointed. I'd be happy to answer specific questions. Jen

Jen,

How was the weather during your Bahama cruise on WindSurf? We were scheduled to sail WindSurf early March; that sailing was 'chartered' and we selected a different cruise line. Does it appear your itinerary will be offered winter of '03?

Message to Jen:

I'm planning a cruise on the Wind Surf in Feb. At dinner how did most of the people dress? I've heard Windstar is relaxed, but I don't want to be overly casual(look like a bum when everyone else is dressed up).
And what percentage of the time, when the ship was moving, were the sails up?
And if any body else has been on the Wind Surf for the Bahama sailing let me hear your thoughts of the trip.
Thanks!
we sailed on line thru Greek Isles last summer. Loved the people on the ship; and the itinerary, altho very warm, not the line's fault. But remember, this a luxury line with Carnival mentality--the cabins need renovating and they nickel and dime you to death--we went on one of their overpriced tours in santorini and they were charging 2 dollars for a little bottle of water--mouchy--when you figure you are paying over 1000 dollars a day. The temp was well over 100 degrees! Will opt for Radisson next time--classier.
