St,. Lucia - Beach excursion or Island tour?

We're going on a cruise in 2 weeks w/ my 7 and 5 year old boys. What is the sand like in St. Lucia, i.e, is it dark colored or white like the other Caribbean islands?

Also, while approaching the island on a cruise ship, will I be able to see the Pitons or do I have to take an island tour to see it?

Thanks.

Lizette:
You will be able to see The Pitons from the cruise ship. I don't remember the color of the sand, sorry. I do remember the bad smell while touring the island near the volcano though.
Have a nice trip!

Hi Lizette, for this island I would definately do an island tour vs. a beach day, it's not really known for the beaches...It stands out with its landscape, banana fields, the friendly natives, local food & art etc. It's really interesting to explore, wals around, and see the jungle and views, breathtaking, bring your camera and try Piton beer, the local brew !

I agree this is the island to tour. We used stluciajungletours.com they were awesome. A great tour, you will go places where vans and cars cannot go.

You might also want to consider a helicopter tour. We did this a few years back and it was most enjoyable. It will give you a totally different perspective seeing the entire island from above especially the inland areas and the pitons, of course.
