Short overnight layover in Miami - need hotel recs please

This isn't specifically related to cruising but I suspect some cruisers would have this same question. We are landing in Miami at 6:00 in the evening and have to be back at the airport for another flight at 9am. I wouldn't mind staying somewhere on the beach within walking distance to some nice restaurants for dinner. Is this do-able or would we just be better off staying in a hotel at the airport? Has anyone done this and what are your recommendations?

You can stay on South Beach as its pretty close to the airport. But catching a 9 am flight - you need to leave the beach by 6:30/7 am. It depends on how early you want to wake up.
If you dont mind the early wake up take a cab from the airport - they are fixed price to South Beach. Its $32 each way. There are many hotels to choose from - you would have to specify your price range. But generally all the nightlife would be in walking or a short taxi ride distance from your hotel.

I love South Beach - it's so much fun! Been there once, a number of years ago. We stayed at the Savoy. Our flight isn't until 11, I figure I want to be at the airport two hours earlier, about 9. Do you figure it's a two hours commute to the airport?

For an 11 am flight you can leave the beach 830/9:00. You never know what traffic will bring and lines at security can run long.

Great idea although a bit ambitious, a hotel by the airport might be less money than by s beach area, depends on what day you arrive. On weekends, you get bargains by the airport--the best is the Hilton, it has its own island, shuttle buses and they have a great disco on weekends in which many of the airport people migrate and celebrate for a while. Restaurants---Cuban and alike are great near calle 8, not too far from the airport. Restaurants on South Beach are plentiful mainly on Lincoln road and Ocean drive. Cab ride from airport grounds to S. Beach about 35 bucks each way.

I like the idea of the Hilton near the airport. It seems they have a shuttle which would save us cab fare, and if we want to go to South Beach, we can do it that night. Thanks for the heads up.
