Sue: Whatever I feel about dress codes I would never dream to openly say where some fellow passengers should go based on how I felt about their attire. I think I would not have the right to do that and that is the reason for the disagreement.

I'm going on a 7-day cruise with 2 formal nights. We will dress for the occasion. If someone decides not to dress for the occasion and feels comfortable in the surroundings, oh, well. I would think if they didn't want to participate in the formal night, they would use the alternative dining. If they decided to use the formal dining room and feel confortable, oh well.

I have seen passengers turned away on HAL and Celebrity for not wearing proper attire. Personally, I think it should be consistently enforced on every cruise line, but many like RCI and CCL have become lax because their target market has an issue with proper dress.

X and HAL are still traditional lines and IME on both the vast majority follow the dress codes.

I also think it is incorrect to say that lines that normally have formal nights do not so in Alaska. I have been to Alaska on X, RCI and NCL and, other than NCL who is always formal optional, X and RCI were every bit as formal as on other itineraries.

Jacketwatch is correct that it is up to the Maitre D to enforce the dress codes. I always say a personal "thank you" to the ones that do.

There are casual cruise lines out there for those who do not enjoy the traditional aspects but X is not one of them.
