you need to leave from Athens Greece-unless you are taking a transatlantic cruise...

Windsurf and Windstar do the Greek Islands.

You would need to fly to Europe...

I took Celebrity's Galaxy RT from Rome (Civitavecchia) to the Greek Isles late August. LOVED it . . . Santorini and Mykonos were like postcards -- except even better.

Several years ago we took a Greek Island cruise with Royal Olympic. Before the cruise, we spent several nights in Athens and several on Mykonos and joined the cruise there -- its first stop, as did another couple. The cruise ended at the port by Athens.
We thought the ship, cabin, and cuisine were fine, but not nearly as nice as the Celebrity Summit, which we took to Alaska several years later.
The excursions on the Greek Islands were great.
We think that combining Athens, at least one island, and a cruise is the best way to experience Greece and the Greek Islands.

We cruised on the Radisson Diamond from Athens to Istanbul. It was a great itinerary and fantastic smaller ship that only held about 250 passengers. We went in early October and the weather was great, I wouldn't go in July or August though. We were lucky and got a 2 for 1 fare.
