Dress Code on HAL Alaskan Cruises

I'll be cruising on HAL (Volendam through Alaska's Inside Passage for 5 days). This is my first HAL cruise, and I wondered if jeans are acceptable in the dining room on casual dinner nights? Can you wear jeans at the open breakfasts and lunches in the dining room? How about in the theaters and shows? Thanks for your help.

We were on the Westerdam this past summer to Alaska. Most days it was very cool and jeans were fine for breakfast and lunch, but certainly not for dinner. On casual nights wear khakis (sp?)and a nice shirt. HAL is a wonderful cruise line and very kind to its guests. I am sure there have been those who wear jeans in the evening, but I would not recommend it. Have a wonderful cruise.

Why are so many people afraid to dress up. That is one of the most "fun" aspects of cruising. Jeans??? By the way, informal, for those of you whose mothers weren't from the south, means cocktail attire, not casual, while casual does not mean jeans, it means nice pants or cute skirt (think something you'd wear to a dressy work place). You can be comfortable and stylish. Dress up guys and gals. That's part of the tradition of cruising. And if you don't like that tradition, then pick a line that specializes in being casual. HAL is one of the more formal lines, btw.

Why did you choose to sail HAL when you want to "dress down" like that? Honey---let me tell you something " It is always better to overdress than underdress". Don't go on a cruise if you want to wear Jeans...the only cruise line that I know that catered to jeans people went under---Commodore Cruises. barf-o-rama.
NO NO NO NO...
Please purchase resort wear--do you have a Steinmart near you? Dillards? Kohls? Don't spend the $$ on an upscale cruise if you can't afford to dress the part.

YES, I'M A TRAVEL SNOB!

You go girl! I agree with everything Sister just said. If you want to dress down, go to a resort or Vegas (yuck). Or stay out of the dining room. But don't pick a cruise line that specializes in the more formal aspects of cruising, then try to change the rules cause ya don't like them! If I pick a more formal line, I hope to find others on the cruise ready to act in accordance with the guidelines

Don't go out and buy a ton of outfits for the cruise, but you might feel more comfortable if you have a nice dress or dressy pant suit for some of the evenings. Hope you have a wonderful trip and cruise many times in the future.

Don't let the nursing home crowd get you down pal - wear whatever you would like !!!Some people like formal, some like casual. Dress however you feel comfortable - not how someone tells you to. After all, you are paying good money for YOUR vacation - so enjoy it.

I know all the older HALites posting here will be upset - but hey, they will get over it - and if not - who cares. Wait til they get a load of me and my jeans and tropical shirts on the Maasdam in about a month !!! Hoooooo Haaaaaaa

I usually cruise on Disney. My 3 kids and I have gone for the last 3 years and we all wear shirts with cartoon characters on them! This year we are also going on the Maasdam. Look out - cartoon shirts on 4 people at dinner time in the dining room!

Also, my kids pee in the pool, so expect some of that too!

Shaking it up a bit!

Pink and Rebel--sound like "real men"to me!!! Sure, wear your jeans--one thing you may not know about H.A.L.--they won't let you in the dining room with them--you may be confusing them with Carnival and Royal Carb.
Ahhh---real men!!!!

There are plenty of ships around with varied dress codes. Pick one which conforms with your style. Please! Don't be a rebel.

HAL is a fairly upscale, moderately priced cruise line. Its pax should not wear jeans, shorts, bathing suits, thongs, etc. after 6PM and especially not at dinner, lounges or shows.

Those who are uncomfortable with that would feel more at home on windjammers, etc.

I'm not sure why some of the posters think dressing preferences depend upon age. I've seen many classy dressers under 29 and just as many sloppy dressers over 49.

What are you going to do, Reb, beat the hell out of them? Sounds like you want to spend a lot of money just to show the world what a jerk you are---save your money--you already did that here without leaving terra-firma--(the ground in case you don't know)

Hmmmm Jeans, it seems you are the one reverting to name calling here - showing everyone your true colors.

As far as wearing jeans and not getting "kicked out" as you say - I have wore jeans on 5 previous cruises and have not been kicked out once. Its all in how you handle the situation.

But from your juvenile attitude and reply, its apparant this is beyond you

Reb, what did you do to convince the staff on the previous 5 cruise(wherein you were dressed to the nines in your jeans)to allow you in the dining room--
get a choke hold on their adams apple?
Just curious, as you stated you would guarantee your getting in in jeans.
