Vaccinations Help!

We are going to the DR in Nov, do we need to get any vaccinations? We are staying in an all inclusive resort in Puerta Plata. Thanks for any help.

It is not a must especially if you are going to be at an all inclusive, but typhoid should be taken. I am a native living in the US for over 30 year and don't worry that but do make sure that my husband gets them.

Enjoy your vacation and don't worry too much about getting sick there. Try not to drink too many fruit and coconut based beverages. They can make you sick if you are not used to them and of course, drink bottled water at all times.

I went to see the Travel Nurse at my doctor's office at Emory and she had a map that showed what was a risk in specific areas....I was concentrating on Mexico at the time and in turn got hepatitus shots. If I was going into the interior more, things like malaria, etc. were more prevelant. She explained that you will run into trouble should you get in a accident, need blood, etc. I would check out what is the risks there and be vaccinated accordingly. I know polio was big there for a while, but I believe we get that anyway.....rest assured and have fun !

You need to have Hepatitis A and B vaccinations and that is all.The vaccine is now in combination and 3 doses are neede. Dose 1 , dose 2 is given 1 month later and dose 3 , is 5 months after dose 2.We are able to fast track doses 1 and 2 if you are leaving in a short time. Speak to your own physician. Off course tetanus boosters should be taken every 10 years whether you are travelling or not so check if you still in status witgh regards to tetanus.

You do not need a vaccination for the D.R... We have been going there (including Puerta Plata) for more than 8 years and will be going back this January. As epaulno said and rightfully so.. don't drink he water unless it's bottled and the secret that took me many years to learn.. don't drink too many coconut based drinks...You'll be on the resort mst of the time...the most you might need in bug repellent..Polio was NOT big there...there were a few cases way in the middle of the country several years ago.. There is so much mis-information,we've stayed in Santo Domingo (3 times), Puerta Plata, Punta Cana (twice) and La Romana for the third time and we have NEVER had a problem and we are seniors.. In La Romana this year we expect to take a cab to the city and go to the flea market walk around town and go to the supermarket... While in Puerta Plata we hire a cab and went to Santiago to a cigar factory for a friend, went to Sousa and did a few other things off the resort area...

I'd make sure my tetanus is up to date and it's not a bad idea to get the Hepatitis A vaccine.

As an RN, I would repeat the advice to have both hepatitis A and B vaccines. Hep A can be transmitted, as you may have read about this winter, via food and restaurant staff. Very easy to prevent --I think everyone should be vaccinated.
