Tortola

My daughter is planning a wedding in Tortola in July. We are staying at Fort Recovery. About 20 people will be going and staying there for the first time. Anyone who has stayed at Fort Recovery or vacationed in Tortola, please reply. I am worried and want everyone to have a good time.

I stayed at Fort Recovery a couple of years ago, and was quite satisfied. It is pretty casual and low key with an "old Caribbean" atmosphere that may not appeal to everyone, but we liked it. It is not really a resort; it has a decent pool and a beach. but that is man-made. Tortola itself has several good beaches, scenery, some good local restaurants, and lots of water-based activities, but not much else. You might want to check out the BVI board on traveltalkonline.com.

Thanks RAB,
I really appreciate your help since this is a first for many of us. We are staying in the 4-bedroom house and hope the accommodations are satisfying. The wedding will occupy most of our time but a trip to St. John or St. Thomas is planned. Any casinos near for the guys? We also hope to tour the island, the rainforest, horseback riding, and of course water sports. Thanks for your help. Lyn

The gambling and the rain forest is in Puerto Rico. I think Tortola is the best of the VI's, better than St Thomas or St Johns. I would recomend going to the baths in Virgin Gorda and maybe diving the Rhone. These are motly day boat trips from tortola but can be great fun. Enjoy!

I stayed at Fort Recovery three years ago and was also very satisfied. The only drawback is that the beach was rocky and small, but the view and accomodations are fantastic. The lady who runs the place (I can't remember her name) is great - very friendly and accomodating.

We enjoyed our hike through the rain forest, and we absolutely loved Cane Garden Bay. Great beach and plenty of beach bars. You MUST plan a night out to Bomba's Surfside Shack, which is directly across on the island from Ft Recovery - lots of fun, very cool place.

As a side trip, we went to the baths on Virgin Gorda, which is definately worth the trip. Take your snorkel gear - we didn't, and regretted it once we got to the baths.

Have a great time!
Dave

greetings, saw your posting about fort recovery. great place, my wife and i went there for our honeymoon four years ago and we thought it was excellent. the beach, though man made, is really sufficient--i thought it was quite nice and the size of the resort is really great (small). would suggest that it's a must to rent a car or two if you're going there, however, since fort recovery isn't close to anything (but if you don't mind driving the distance shouldn't deter you). we had a great time and you should really enjoy it. we'll go back there one day.
