What is the weather like in Provo in early September? We would like to take advantage of the long weekend for a getaway and really want to go to Turks & Caicos, but am worried about the timing.

I know its hot and peak hurricane season, but from what I read, its uncommon for TCI to get hit and only gets hit every 9 years on average - since they just got hit very hard last year (Hurricane Ike), I'm thinking statistically our odds are ok. Has anyone gone in early September and what was your experience with the weather?? Is the risk too great?

The weather is beautiful, you are correct..they got hit last year...so what are the odds, some places close--resorts and restaurants..but, lots stay open, not a problem.

absolutely no one can make any sort of relialbe prediction for hurricanes in sept (or other time). not IF one will occur or where it will go. that said sept will be hot and rain unlikely. the water will be about 83 and you won't be into the "winter" windier months. i'd book your week end. if you're really nervous get trip insurance with hurricane clause.

While I can't predict the weather, Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Hannah last September was the first direct hits in 50 years!

Get hurricane insurance just in case, and know in general you usually have about 5-7 days of knowing one is coming. Ike even as a catagory 4 and on Provo, the main island, only suffered roof damages and landscaping. (Grand Turk was not so lucky, but has bounced back nicely.)

Statistically it seems in the entire region to be quieter overall.

We spent the first two weeks of September on Provo a couple of years ago. Everyday was wonderful. Hot and Sunny (just what we wanted) and the ocean water was warmer than bath water. You can wade right in. We brought a couple of blow up floats (purchased at Walmarts at home) and floated around on those floats for hours in the ocean! You can snorkel in front of Coral Gardens in the nice warm water!

Thank you so much! I use to live on the Gulf Coast many years ago, so am well aware of not being able to predict the likelihood of a hurricane more than a week or so out, but knowing people have had good luck with weather definitely helps sway my decision. Thanks again!

Shirleyk - out of curiosity - did you purchase insurance for hurricane/bad weather protection when you went in September? We are going in Sept and still trying to decide what to do and luckily are sill within in the window for many policies (JUST booked our trip, but its still well over 15 days away yet, so no "named" storms yet for that period)
