Should I Go?

I am due to go to St Kitts for a week on Sept 18th but am now very scared after seeing all the damage caused by the hurricanes. We do not get extreme weather like that in England and to be honest my knowledge of hurricanes is not that good! I know without a crystal ball no predictions are 100% but what does anyone think the chances of another one striking are? Should I consider cancelling my vacation?

This is a very active hurricane season...with the peak being mid september. Hurricane season runs to the end of november, but the chances are less likely at that time of year due to the cooler temps.

I love the caribbean, but would never go during the months of august, september or october as the weather is too risky and many places are closed duting this time. Instead of cancelling why not just reschedule if you can. If you can go mid to late november it is quite lovely, and the prices are still reasonable. The weather is beautiful at that time too.

as many others have posted the best hurricane website for the caribbean is www.stormcarib.com, you will find regular updates there.

I personally would only cancel if there was a hurricane heading that way, and I don't believe there is at this time.
For several years now, we've always gone to the Caribbean end of September and beginning of October. This year is the first year we've had to move ours. Hurricane Frances did some damage to our hotel in the Bahamas. The airline let us change our destination with no fee and the hotel reimbursed us. So we're now going to the British Virgin Islands

I live 11 miles from St. Kitts and we have had nothing but wonderful weather this year. We feel very blessed to have been missed by both Frances and Ivan, and although there is always a possiblity of another hurricane developing in the Atlantic, we are not anticipating one at this time.

Hurricane season is nearly half the year, so it can be kind of hard to plan a trip around the tropical season. But, if it makes you feel any better, most of our storms in this area are very typically within the first two weeks of September. That's not to say that we haven't had hurricanes before or after that time, but typically that is our peak time.

If it were me, I would go ahead with the trip and hope for the best. If a hurricane does head this way, you can always fly out in plenty of time to avoid it.

You might want to be vigilant about checking on the weather in the Atlantic once a day via TV news or newspaper, so that you are aware of anything that might develop and possibly come very close to St. Kitts. I only say that because so many people come down on vacation and honestly have no clue when there is a hurricane closely headed in our direction.

Have a great trip!

As the others have said, no one can give you accurate predictions about the weather but you can check some of the "hurricane" websites: www.nws.noaa.gov/ www.weathercarib.com
http://stormcarib.com
www.weatherunderground.com/tropical/

to see if any major storms will be threatenting when you are planning your trip. Right now the only active storm is Hurricane Ivan and that one is very far away from St. Kitts and poses no threat.

I hope you enjoyed your trip as much as my husband and I did! We got back from St.Kitts yesterday (our honeymoon) and had nothing but gorgeous weather. The island is amazing...I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place not too built up by tourism, has a lot of activities (besides sitting on the gorgeous beaches), lots of history, friendly people, and great food. We split our stay btwn the new Marriott resort and Ottley's Plantation Inn. Both were great, but Ottley's is breathtaking and the food is exquisite!! We had a room with our own private pool in our patio! We had a wonderful week there. Taxi drivers are a great source of info, however they can be a little pricey (it's the main way of getting around).

I hope you did go and enjoyed your trip. We visited Anguilla a couple of years ago in hurricane season and it was one of the best trips we have ever had! Not that I'd recommend throwing caution to the wind, but there's little reason not to go unless there are hurricanes or dangerous weather predicted for the place you're traveling to. It's true some things are closed that time of year but we didn't find it to be a major problem (plus prices were lower). We are headed to St Kitts later this month for our first visit and really looking forward to it.
