shark attacks at xel-ha
Does anyone know if sitings of dangerous sharks have occured at or very near Xel-Ha (bull sharks, tiger sharks, etc.?) Bull sharks are of particular concern to me because I've read that they like a mix of shallow salt and fresh water (found at Xel-ha).
I've heard that the floating bridge at Xel-ha has a net to keep sharks out. Is this true and do you think they could still get in? I know shark attacks in this are of the Yucatan are very rare anyway but I would like more peace of mind. I'm traveling with my mom, and she is TERRIFIED of sharks. I want her to enjoy Xel-ha worry free.

Hello there,
Do NOT worry about shark attacks in the Yucatan.
You have more to worry about from the timeshare sharks that will converge upon you in the Cancun airport than you have to concern yourself about what may be lurking in Xel Ha.
Firstly, the passage into Xel Ha is extremely shallow and rough.
Secondly, there are not all that many fish in the lagoons at Xel Ha.
Thirdly, bull sharks are not at all common in that part of the Caribbean.
Fourthly, there have not been many shark attacks (if any) in that region for many years.
I pay attention to sharks and shark attacks because I have an interest in sharks.
We have also been traveling every year to Mexico since 1994, so I would have noticed if there had been any issues.
Go and enjoy your vacation.

I found the website. It's from the International Shark Attack File from the Florida Museum of Natural History.
