?s re: Our Lucaya in Grand Bahamas
Thanks to Fodorites' input (!), hubby and I are heading to Westin Our Lucaya in the Grand Bahamas October 6-9 for a long weekend to celebrate our 20th anniversary.
Now, we need advise on rooms.
From this board, I gather that an ocean view is my best bet. We want a king and a no-smoking room. Other than that, is there something else I need to know? Best building? wing? floor? something to avoid? something worth splurging on?
I'll have lots more ?s on restaurants, so if you want to chime in on that, I'd love it, but first thing's first -- getting a good room!
We just came back from a FL trip with kids and honestly our only view was of a tangle of noisy ductwork and laundry services. We were like in the industrial wasteland of our resort! Didn't care much -- we closed door and put own AC on and with kids we were always running, but this time, we want naps, sleep-ins, open windows with ocean breezes. You know. we want a *nice* room. So, bring it on all you Our Lucaya experts!

We stayed in Lighthouse Point building when we were there a few years ago. It was the building at the very end sort of by itself. I remember having a hard time distinguishing which building I was wanting when making reservations online because they don't actually state Lighthouse Point. I think we ended up doing them over the phone to ensure we had the right room. If I remember correctly, there were only 3 or 4 floors. We had a deluxe ocean view room and it was very nice. We enjoyed the whole resort and the island too. We plan to return to that resort soon.

thanks, MBL340. That sounds like a nice option. It seems from what I could read and see on the Westin site that one of the buildings is a huge, big ol' hotel, which feels a bit anonymous. 3 or 4 floors is much more intimate, which hits me right. Guess, my only concern-- you say 'at the end' is it a trek to get to stuff (pool, etc.)? or is that not an issue. It's always so tough to figure these things out from photos and web info! thanks so much for your help.

No, it's not a trek at all to the pools. I believe they have 4 pools and the one closest to Lighthouse Point building is a beautiful infinity edge pool. It has a nice ledge that you can put your lounge chair in also and dangle your feet in the water.
Here's a shot of the pool from our room.

Here's another shot right after a rain and you can see how the chairs are on the pool ledge.

The other Westin building is huge and it was full of families with children. The Lighthouse Point building is much smaller and I don't remember seeing a lot of kids in that area or in the pool. If you're going with kids, the other one would be a good option.
You mentioned restaurants too. We ate at several restaurants on the resort and they were all good. But for a lot less money you can walk across the street and have many other options. My favorite was Shenanigans Pub. They had the best potato soup. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

mlb340: I always thought Lighthouse Point were all suites. Nice to know they have rooms. Your pics bring back nice memories. That pool was our favorite. Barely anyone there.
Kflodin: Lighthouse Point looked REALLY NICE to us (low buidling, painted an attractive pale yellow). We stayed in the bigger building. I would definitely stay at Lighthouse if I were you since mlb340 tells you it's nice. She or he is right that is not a trek.
