Rum Punch recipe
Anyone have a really good recipe for rum punch? We are having a party in a few weeks to celebrate the opening of our new tiki bar that my husbnad has been building out by our pool. I have a cool tiki drink dispenser that I want to fill with a tropical adult beverage.
Thanks!!

One of Sour (fresh squeezed lime juice)
Two of Sweet (half water + half sugar, boiled & cooled)
Three of Strong (The rums as shown below)
Four of Weak (Clear, fresh spring water),
Add Angostura Bitters for colour and flavour.
Grate fresh nutmeg on top also for taste, and it is believed by some that it actually gives the punch "more punch".
Peace, Greenie

Yes, greenie posted the traditional proportions of rum or ti punch
ne of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak. Technically a rum punch has to have at least 4 ingredients to qualify as a rum punch.
I love the dash of bitters and the ground nutmeg, too. Using freshly squeezed OJ makes a big difference, I think. One of the first Christmases I spent with my husband's huge clan, I came with a huge jug full of rum punch (they didn't drink much of it, but I needed a few tumblers of it just to deal with his adult daughters!). I used fresh lime, orange, and grapefruit juices, and bottled (not canned, which sometimes tastes a little metallic to me) pineapple and passionfruit juices. For a balance of economy of palate, a like a nice mid-shelf golden rum like Mount Gay from Barbados or Bharbancourt from Haiti for mixing. If I'm feeling indulgent, I add a small float of dark rum on top of each serving. Yum! Now I'm making myself thirsty!

How about a "Smash"
Season to taste
1 oz coconut rum
1 oz dark rum
1 oz appricot brandy
add pineapple juice
and splashes of orange,lime and
lemmon juice.
I take some pieces of orange, lime and lemmon and freeze them in ice and add those for color to the punch.
Have a GREAT party!!

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! I am going to do some taste testing this weekend to decide which one to use!
EJ..I agree about the fresh juices. A place near us makes an orange crush with fresh OJ and fruit slices and it is outstanding.
Travelbuff..I remember a a drink called a Goombay Smash when i was in the Bahamas long ago. Great idea.

so that's what a Goombay Smash is! It sounds really good.
travelbuff, would it ruin the effect to substitute something else coconutty for the coconut rum? Maybe coconut extract, coconut water, or coconut milk? Maybe there are other coconut rums out there that are good, but the first time I ever had Malibu rum it was my last time--felt like I was drinking suntan lotion! Are there coconut infused rums that are less heavy handed when it comes to that fake-coconut flavor? I'd love your suggestions, because I love coconut and would like to be able to incorporate it more into tropical drinks without having to use the heavy cream of coconut for pina coladas. Thanks!

You don't use alot of the Malibu, so I have never found it a problem, but sure why not try coconut milk and just throw in more dark rum.
Yes it's a Goombay Smash and it's my favorite while in the Bahamas. I make it for parties, but somehow it never has just quite the same flavor. I guess you need the ocean breezes to make it taste ohhhhh, just that much better.

Love this topic!!!
I use almost the same recipe as Greenie, slightly modified: we find that a whole part of fresh lime juice (we have a key lime tree and they are very very strong) is too much, cut back to a half part. I love it. However, instead of spring water for the "weak", we use a combination of fruit juices (whatever you have - orange juice and either Ruby Red grapefruit or tropical fruit punch).
I haven't used the bitters. I will get some and report back after my day off tomorrow
Do you think that would be okay with using the fruit juice, or should I go to water?
I love Mount Gay rum! And ejcrowe, I feel the same way about coconut rum, I like it in splashes on top. A whole shot is just too much, but a little taste....mmmm!
Now, where's my Bob Marley CD?
