Taxi vs car rental in St John?

Hello, we are traveling to St. John and wanted to know if it may be feasible to just take a taxi to beaches vs. renting a car? Interested in cost of rental vs. taxi's?? thanks for your help.

Getting a taxi to and from Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay is fairly easy. There are a lot of beaches that are better done by rental car. I've been to St John 3 times. The first time we used a taxi and just rented a car for one day. The last 2 times we rented a car for the entire time. I think renting a car is the way to go...more freedom to go where you want and to explore all of the different beaches of St John.

A rental car is about $60-70 a day. You can easily surpass that in taxi fares depending on where you want to go.

Well, the cost for a taxi will vary depending on how far your destination is from where you are staying. Generally speaking if you plan on making two or more round trips to almost anywhere on the island in a single day you'll find it cheaper to rent a car than takke taxis.

Usually easier to rent a car and the fares do vary destination to destination. If you are staying in a villa, depending on its remoteness, you probably will be happier with a rental depending on its location. You can usually walk along the road and wave one down but the trip to Coral Bay and East End is not always something the taxi drivers want to do especially at night after dinner.
Taxi fares can be found @
Your options are to rent on STJ or rent on STT and use the car barge but if you do that make sure your agency allows the vehicle to be taken off island.

where you stay is a big part of the equation. there are villas all over the island and you might not get a ride home, as the taxi won't have any fares on the way back and it might end their night. we stayed near reef bay beach and imo a car was a necessity.

you also can go where you want when you want and change your mind in the middle....

if i recall rental cars are somewhere around 330 per week off season. there are lots of threads on this board with rental car information. even if the rental ends up being a little more, you are more in control of what you do and when....
