Reserve car in Cayman now or wait?

We've decided to rent a car while in Grand Cayman and Avis seems to have the best prices. Can I find a better rate once we're on the island or should I just go ahead and reserve the car now?

I reserved through Cico Avis in Feb. directly through their own website in GC. The first price they quoted was high and I told them so. They countered with a $100 reduction! We paid $195 for a week for a Honda Civic. Hope this helps.

It really depends on the time of year you plan to travel GC. For instance, during Easter (a big time in Grand Cayman) and Pirate's Week you may not find an available rental car to be had on the entire island. During the summer months you stand a better chance of getting a good rate once you get to the island. However, I have always had good success booking on-line or via an 800 number for Dollar or Budget regardless of the time I plan to travel.

I have found that rates in advance are better---I rented a full size 4 door (Taurus I think) from Avis for our trip on the 12th of April. The rates on Orbitz were lower than what I was offered via CaymanCondos.com

I would not wait, depending on the time you are visiting it is possible for cars to be sold out. Our friends tried to get a good walk-up rate 2 years ago (despite my urging that they reserve in advance) and they paid $500 for the same car that I got for $259.

I'm getting quotes of $279/wk. for a jeep in Aug. Is that out of line? In my mind I wanted to spend more like $200. Has anyone heard of or used cayman car rental guide.com to book a car?

I did a bunch of shopping and found the best rates at 'Andys Rent a car'. Check out: http://www.andys.ky. They also have other discounts for things like timeshare owners, etc. But, there internet rates were definitely lower than avis, budget, etc. Also, they seemed to have a good selection.

Keep in mind, I haven't rented with them yet, only booked a car...

You will always pay a premium for a Jeep. The only reason to get on is for the open-air experience. But you do pay for it.

We will be at the Grand Cayman in late July and wanted to rent a mini-van, but the rate is about $600 a week. Would we be better off renting when we get there? We have a party of 7. Thanks for your suggestions.
