It's always a good idea to make reservations for dinner at the more upscale restaurants - in most instances you can call earlier in the day. At this time of year it's not so much to guarantee a table but so the chef has some idea how many people hell be serving for dinner that evening. For casual places, reservations are not normally needed. Of course, there's always exceptions to any "rule" so better to be safe than sorry.
