SAnParis, I can also recommend The Cottage Club, since I know you like self catering accomodations. It's located in Windwardside, not too far from the beginning of the hiking trails up Mt. Scenery. There are also several restaurants in walking distance.

Thx, Statia. I don't have the timing down yet...we are building a new house (& have been for 2 years !) but expect that it will finally be done in August. Once the move is complete...on to Montserrat & Saba...

Back to the original topic:

Apparently Montserrat is still affecting flights! My parents were supposed to return home from Tortola yesterday, but many flights to San Juan were cancelled due to volcanic ash...(the morning flights went out, but after noon everything on AA was cancelled). I don't have the whole story, but somehow they got to San Juan last night, AA refused to pay for their hotel room too!

Anyone else in Fodorland had this happen?

The day we left Montserrat (in March) the airport there was closed all day. Our flight (@ 5pm) was the first of only two flights all day. I believe Antigua is the closest & that effects a lot of flights as a lot of the smaller carriers go through there...I've been stuck in worse places.

I understand there have no American Eagle flights operating out of SJU since Saturday afternoon.
the ash seems to be affecting the BVI and the American VI and Puerto Rico.

Picked up my folks yesterday (exhausted 80 somethings!). They said American Eagle is not flying at all out of SJU. San Juan airport was crowded with travelers unable to begin their vacation. Yet Caribbean Sun is (that's how they got out of Tortola). Flights to the mainland are going on as scheduled.

Joan, this happened to a friend leaving Nevis about a week ago. They could not leave because flights were not leaving SJU. The ash on and off but it can be really bad.

Glad your parents made it back OK
