Just got Back from Ritz San Juan...
My husband, sister and I just got back from a 4 night stay at the Ritz Carlton SJU.We decided to splurge on the Ritz Carlton Club level-a room (one of only 4) that had a very tiny terrace for a whopping 865.00 per day, 86.50p/d, plus tax...bringing the total of way over 1,000.00 per day.
Before we left, the concierge told us the club would be open to 11:30pm serving drinks. Needless to say that when we arrived at 10:00pm-club was closed up like a drum and we were forced to spend over 100.00 on 2 glasses each of some cheap wine at the lounge. We otherwise would have rented a regular room for the first night for a few hundred dollars less being that we missed out on all Club amenities. On for a bite to eat... we were told there was a Chinese place in the Casino. We were sat by a surly Maitre D' only to see $18.00 for a bowl of wonton soup, $9.00 for an eggroll... Come ON! We got up and walked out.
Casino was nice but the machines were fixed that NO ONE won anything. 20.00 in quarters went in literally 5 minutes, not spitting one rotten coin back just to keep you playing for a little while--same thing happened the next night and to everone with whom we spoke. Naturally, I expect to lose but send a FEW coins down my way to keep playing for a few minutes. NOT ONE COIN! AND THE SAME ALL AROUND ME EVERY NIGHT! We stopped goig after the first 2 nights and it was too bad as we enjoy playing a little bit each night.
Got to our room and A/c was broken. Guys trying ti fix problle to 3:00am to no avail. No other room to give us either-so we lierally sweat it out our first night. The next day the a/c was fixed by 4:00 pm-we couldnt even go in the room all day cause it was filled with workmen. Picture window in room so dirty, you could barely make out if it was sunny or rainy. The porch was never cleaned once despite requests for all the bird droppings to be cleaned. The sound remained broken on our TV, toilet overflowed and the shower flooded the floor if you were not standing in a certain way.
Candy wrappers left in our room along with no fresh towels or soap replenished after we very nicely requested it to our sour faced maid.Turn down, left all dirty thigs in room and no fresh towels.
The food presentations were nothing like the club in Cancun(and half the price. Breakfast was nothing but buns and fatty cold cuts. Lunch was wonderful and by far the nicest display of the day. At night, it was just cheese and crackers. All for 1,000.00 a night. The Ritz Club was not as clean as it could be. Glass windows left filthy with children's fingerprints. The men in the morning wore the same filthy uniform suits with dried food stuck to them for our entire stay. Also, they both had head colds and one of them kept wiping his nose with his bare hands and touched everthing including the food displays. Needless to day, I have horrible bronchitus along with my family and several other guest all couphing and stuffed up for half of our trip.It cost me 210.00 to see the hotel doctor yesterday.
Spa was poorly maintained and showers, jacuzzi and steam room remained broken for half of our trip. Notice, they didnt cut that outrageous resort fee though for lack of services. Also, every employee expected a tip from opening doors to placing down towels.
On the plus side, the lobby, restaurants and public areas were lovely. The beach was very nice, no problem with umbrellas except that they come and take them all down at around 4:00 each day and if you are napping... you dont know this fact until you wake up with a sunburn as I did. Beach staffwas couteous and served iced watermelon and cold toels around the beach. Thant was really nice. Anyway, that was my experience there. I am signing off now. I hope it helps!

Canterbury417 - We also just returned from a horrible stay. Will NEVER return. What angered me the most was the 10% resort fee - which I agree with in principal, but when you cannot use anything they are charging you for it should be reimbursed. For more about our disappointing stay see my post on "Ritz Cartlon San Juan." The Wall Street Journal said Friday that the hotel is under new management so don't know if this is a good thing (and hopefully the will improve) or if the new management is the cause of it all.

My husband travels to PR often for business. He won't stay at the Ritz in SJ. It has not had the same level of service as other RCs. Perhaps, it will improve with new management, but I doubt my husband would take a chance on trying it again.
