Jamaica or elsewhere?

We are looking for a laidback, relaxing vacation without kids. We want to read, eat some good meals, explore a bit and chill. We are not looking for a nightlife scene and would like to get there easily from Newark airport. We have been to Jamaica once before and stayed at the Ritz Carlton with our kids. We do not want this type of place. We are considering Rockhouse Hotel and The Caves. What about Goldeneye? How far is the drive from Montego Bay to Negril if we decided to rent a car? We are pretty adventurous. Thanks in advance!

I'm considering Tensing Pen in Jamaica. Looks great. Similar to Rockhouse. I believe it takes 2 hours to get to Negril from airport. I have read it suggested not to rent a car, but have a transfer set up for safety.

I'm also considering Tulum in Mexico. The Mayan Riviera area in general might fit your needs also, easy to get to, chill and have adventures...Tulum, Akumal, Playa del Carmen, even possibly Isla Holbox...

Interested in hearing responses to your question.

Trish

The ride from Sangster Airport in Montego Bay to Negril is roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes. They mada a new road some years and it is not nearly as bad as it used to be. Since it is pretty much not recommended to drive on Jamaica, we had arranged for a private taxi.

Hello, our family has been going to Montego Bay Jamaica since the late 60's. Please look at our website caribsandsvilla.com It is a beach/ocean front 3-bedroom villa with a full staff (no extra charge) just tips recommended) where someone cooks all of your meals and treats you like Kings and Queens! You have your own beach steps away from your bedroom door, private pool and spa. It is very safe!! Go to the website, see for yourself and read the reviews. We have a driver that you can hire for the week and he is also a wonderful tour guide. I go about three to four times a year myself.

The Caves is the ultimate getaway. We'd be headed there again in Jan if they had any availability. It is really a magical place. That being said, Tensing Pen and Rockhouse are on a seconds list. Rockhouse seems to be a bit more of a resort feeling with a nice restaurant. I wouldn't drive in Jamaica. I also agree that Riviera Maya/playa del Carmen area is wonderful with lots to do and explore and a rental car in Mexico is fine. It is a fun place that I can't wait to return to.
