Is insurance mandatory when renting a car in Puerto Rico?
Friends of ours rented a car at the San Juan airport a few weeks ago and although they have an auto insurance policy with a solid US Company, they were forced/required to pay for rental car insurance? Normally, when we rent a car, we decline the daily rental rate, but I've heard that's not an option when renting a car in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Any comments/experiences?

Most credit card companys won't cover in PR for some reason. When wife & I rented car we had to purchase their coverage protection. And after we saw how the locals drove we had no problem with it! Saw 3 accidents in first 15 min heading to El Junque from San Juan!

I was in PR last February, and had no problem. I told them I didn't want their insurance because I had my own. They never even asked for my insurance card. I checked with my agent before I went to PR. He said that I am covered. Allstate Ins. Visa card

I was there two years ago and to my knowledge the locals dont NEED insurance for their cars (could have changed in the last few years), so, you should not need for a rental. But, you would be wise to get it!
