My fiance and I are thinking of heading to the Carribean for our honeymoon in early October. Would it be wise to seek another location since this is hurricane season? If not, are there some islands that would be less vulnerable to a hurricane than others?

Choose Aruba. Typically out of the hurricane range and rarely affected.

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are all south of the hurricane belt. Aruba is a particularly popular honeymoon destination and one of my favorite islands -- the best beaches in the Caribbean (as judged by several magazines), great restaurants and nightlife, and plenty of activities both in/under the water and on land. My husband and I went there for our honeymoon 2.5 years ago and have been there 2 times since. We love it there. We also got married in the Fall, September 24 and it was awesome in Aruba.<BR><BR>Pretty much all of the couples there were honeymooners or anniversary couples. You will really enjoy it.<BR><BR>We stayed at the Marriott Resort & Stellars Casino and loved it. We are thinking about going there for the 4th time in late October, but are considering a new destination. It is hard though, when you had such a wonderful vacation.<BR><BR>The Marriott has a wonderful waterfall in the swimming pool as well as a swim up pool bar. The beach is fabulous and rents all types of watersports. The Marriott is the last hotel on the strip of high rise, so if you like a little seclusion at night, you can have it. <BR><BR>Definitely my choice for a first class resort with privacy if you want. Quite elegant. You might want to splurge a little extra for the wraparound ocean front view. I think it is $274.00 a night, but well worth it, especially for your honeymoon.<BR><BR>Have fun where ever you choose and congratulations to you both!<BR><BR>Susan

When booking your hotel, ask if they have a hurricane guarantee. Some of them do...if a hurricane strikes, they will give you another trip. I believe the bigger all-inclusives like Sandals and SuperClubs offer them.

Regardless of where you choose to go, be sure to by trip interruption insurance. Even if you choose the islands outside of the hurricane belt, such as the ABCs or the more southern islands (Grenada, Barbados, the Grenadines), if those islands are spared a direct strike by a storm, they may nevertheless be impacted. And a storm far away may impact your ability to travel to or from your destination Trip interruption insurance can protect you against extra costs you incur, or non-refundable payments which you lose.

AS a PS to the suggestion of trip insurance, MAKE SURE it covers interruption by a hurricane. Many do not.

Aruba is NOT out of the hurricane belt but is south of hurricane alley which is the northern Caribb. Aruba can and does have lousy weather too as hurricanes and tropical storms do enjoy visiting there too! But, the chances of a hurricane are reduced the further south you go but no place is immune. Pick you island based on what you want and have a back up plan with an alternate if you have to - no matter what island! The resorts insurance only pays off if it is a direct hit so be sure to explore options your own insurance.

It has NEVER been hit, that is a FACT!!<BR><BR>I've frequently visited Aruba during the "hurricane" season, and Aruba has had terrific weather all of those times. That is why travel agents recommend Aruba during the fall months.<BR><BR>So if you pick Aruba for your honeymoon destination John, rest assured, you will NOT have a hurricane during your vacation in ARUBA!!<BR>

Aruba is like a desert. I've never seen so much cactus in my life. It is not lush, it's flat and dry. I don't know if this is your idea of a honeymoon. The beaches are great but you can go to the other caribbean islands that are prettier and also have good beaches. If your idea of a vacation is to just stay in the resort, then I guess this won't bother you but if you're like us who likes to explore the island, once is enough for us to come to Aruba.

Thank you everyone for your advice. After a little research, it seems as though each island has its definite ups and downs. Some islands are lush and tropical, yet succeptible to hurricanes. Others are pretty much desert islands with little chance of getting hit. Sounds like insurance is definitely the way to go regardless of which island we choose!
