Hotel Recommendations for Dec. trip to GBI
My husband and I have decided to head to GBI for the holidays and need to book a hotel room. Given the last minute nature of this, we don't have a lot to choose from - and I've read such a variety of feedback, it's hard to decide based on what rooms are left.
Our primary goal is to relax on the beach and I would like to go on a few dives. Would love recommendations from people who have gone recently (post-hurricanes) and can give updated info.
Based on some searches and calls we've made, the Our Lucaya Westin is at $209/nt for handicapped-accessible rooms (all they have left outside of the $999/nt range), Sheraton is generally sold out (though one site did have it at $179 - they may still) and I don't know what to believe about the quality of all the rest. Given the limited availability, we will be pretty open. Also checked Priceline but they don't have any "Resort" hotels left and I'm not sure what they consider 2*.
Thank you for your suggestions!

I just finished an exhaustive search for a Christmas destination to a beach resort. We loved the Westin at Our Lucaya but chose not to consider it for Christmas because the overwhelming opinion is that the Bahamas can be very chilly(NOT beach weather) at this time of year. If you've found a reliable weather site that tells a different story, our family would be very pleased. I guess I'm just trying to say that before you buy your tix to a "beach" vacation, I'd double check the temperatures. Good luck, whatever your decision. I did not find much availabilty. Threehearts

I wrote an extensive trip report as did caribtraveler(?sp) who also enjoyed it. I thought it was an ideal quick getaway from DC with lovely beaches, powder white sand and just pure relaxation. I was not a fan of the restaurants at Our Lucaya. We felt the meals were very overpriced for mediocre to poor food. Others feel differently and there are about 5 restaurants to choose from. Across the street at the marketplace there are many more dining options but we became familiar with these a bit too late into our 3 day weekend. The Sheraton side was nice but I thought the Westin with it's infinity pool and floats was geared more to adults. We stayed in a deluxe oceanfront room which had a huge balcony. I would highly recommend this category of room. There is not much of a nightlife at the resort but we weren't there for that. The casino was not open when we were there. Perhaps others who have stayed more recently can give a better update. Have fun and let us know what you choose. Threehearts
