Help with 2 Days on St. Thomas

We arrive on St. Thomas and have 2 days before we take the ferry over to Tortola where we will sail around the BVI for a week.

We are fortunate to have 2 free nights at the Ritz Resort on STT.

We are going to rent a car. What's the best way to spend the little time we have there. I know St. John is worth the trip, but since we will seeing a great deal of beautiful sights, I don't think we are going to spend any time there since we haven't been to STT before....maybe next time.

I will want to do some duty free shopping, but other that that, we want to see the island.

If you all say it's best to spend time at the resort, that's OK too, but we will be on a boat for a week, so I think doing some exploring will be fun. Given the short amount of time there, what's the best way to spend our time?

How's the driving on the Island? Do we need to bring our GPS?

Thanks so much

teach: Definitely get out and drive around. You will get a map with your rental. Just have someone remind the driver to "Keep left!" Here are a few ideas:
1. a circumnavigation of the island. Stop at beaches that appear on your map. Some will have nice beach bars for a libation. Go for a swim. Enjoy.
2. The Ritz is at the eastern most point of St Thomas. Get out and see Frenchtown, Paradise Point in the late afternoon on a day with cruise ships leaving, shopping downtown. There are a lot of things to see.
3. The restaurants at the Ritz are a little...uh...Ritzy? Go to Red Hook for dinner at Fish Tails, Island Time, heck just park and walk around to see what interests you.
4. It's an island. You don't need GPS! ;-)
