How shallow is the water at Stingray City?
We'll be going with a 4-year-old who's not afraid of water but does not swim. Will it be shallow enough for him to be able to stand (he's about 3 ft 7 inches)? Is doing that excursion appropriate at his age?

It is appropriate and if he has a life jacket on he shouldn't need to be able to stand. You will be able to stand and just have him float around you. As long as you don't think the stingrays will scare him, you'll both have a great time.

When I was in Grand Cayman, they had seperate trips to Stingray City and Stingray Sandbar. The way it was explained to me was that Stingray City had waters that were roughly 10 feet deep. We went to Stingray Sandbar. There the depth ranged from 3-5 feet.

We will be spending a day on GC from the cruise ship. Can we take a taxi to get to the Stingray Sandbar or Stingray City? Where exactly is the Sandbar?

We are going to Caymans in April and someone here suggested checking th above website. You get answers to your questions.

Stingray Sandbar is out in the middle of a bay, at least a mile (maybe two) offshore. So unless the taxi has propellers, you may not make it.

All you need to do is take a cab to where ever your boat charter takes off from, and the boat ride out is quick & easy. Most charters do a couple other stops for some excellent snorkeling on the reefs.

For the OP, definitely want a lifejacket for the 4 year old. As long as you keep him close to you, you'll be fine. The stingrays may freak him out a bit, being that most of the adults will be freaked out (in a good way) and screaming if it's their first visit.

It's simply a "must do" in GC.

I echo the suggestion of Captain Marvin's. I went solo to Grand Cayman a year ago and had a fabulous time with Captain Marvin and his assistant Eric. There were several children with us on our day trip of snorkeling and to Stingray sandbar and Captain Marvin was very safety conscious. Life jackets were provided and the children all did fine. Also, there are many other locations great for kids-especially Rum Point. Plan on spending an afternoon-or a day-there. The water is extremely shallow and there is plenty of shade and seating to relax while watching the kids.
